Contest

RKB writes:

How about having a contest where we all try to predict  how the prologue will go?  We used to do that with Robert Jordan books back in ye olde Usenet days.  Most people were way off base as to how the next book would go, but it was fun to read.

The contest at Bitten ends on Friday. You have until then to make your predictions. One lucky winner among people who correctly predict the outcome of the prologue will get a signed book of their choice from Kate Daniels series (first book is available in English, French, or German) or, if you’re willing to hold out, you can choose to wait two-three months for an ARC or early copy of Magic Mourns. (I could just print it and send it to you, but that would be cheesy.)

Kate watches as Curran looks at her and smirks as he starts to sample the venison . A vampire (Ghastik) appears at the window and says you have never invited me to dinner Kate and blue looks good on you. To make a long story short he wants to know what she has done to gain the interest of Roland’s warlord. Curran of course is not too happy at the interruption and starts toward the vampire with menacing eyes. Kate intecedes and then they are intterupted by Derek with a major emergency. Curran frustrated at the interruptions snarls but listens to Derek and they leave.

Kate makes the dinner and is completely prepared but needs to leave for an emergency, when she gets back home curran is there eating and they talk ,he implies some things, she then attempts to kick him out but aggressive visitors arive for kate and much violence happens. kate is worried over new arrivals and thier origins, curran is curious (as all cats are). kate stays quiet goes home to go to sleep for work the next day, curran goes back to the keep after warning her to stay alive.

    My prediction…how hard….
ummm kate comes home to find Curran, tho she wasn’t supposed to see him for another week. And he demands his dinner now, but since she doesnt have the stuff so he just asks for the naked part. then it goes tto the first chapter, a week earlier or something. IDK! im horrible at predicting! But i’ll try anyway. Happy writings!

Kate honors her promise and makes dinner per Curran’s request. As in Magic Burns where Curran seems like he’s going to kiss her but doesn’t, my guess is Curran leaves after dinner without making a move. I think he wants to keep her guessing. More importantly, like the kiss, he wants her to be ready and willing. I don’t think Kate is there yet, emotionally.

Curran breaks into her house (again) and he demands his dinner. A deal’s a deal so she goes to change and comes back in her blue panties. He compliments her and she just ignores him sorta pissed. They talk for a while. He eats. They get a little naughty. then Derek walks in on them telling them there’s an emergency. Curran growls (he’s having a bit too much fun) and Kate insists on coming. Chapter starts with Derek explaining the problem.

Kate decides that there’s nothing for it but to make good on the bet. She cooks dinner, sets the table, and is pacing the floor in her underwear as she waits for Curran to arrive. Preoccupied and busy rehearsing her, “No smex” speech for Curran, she doesn’t notice that the outside wall of her living room is shimmering, as if from a heat wave. By the time she realizes that something is very wrong, a Suitably Impressive Minion of Roland has melted through her wall and any wards on it and is in her apartment, hell-bent on bringing her down. Slayer is on the coffee table due to the present lack of scabbard, and a lovely fight with various household objects ensues before she can get to the sword. She’s holding her own when Curran bursts through the door in warrior form and jumps into the fray. The Minion is destroyed, but so is the table, one chair, various items of household decor, and the dinner. Both Kate and Curran are bloody and battered, with Curran sporting venison and apple pie in his mane. The mood is broken, although Kate claims the bet fulfilled, as she upheld her end and Curran has clearly been served.

Curran frowns at the door suspiciously. There’s no sounds coming from the other side. He grips the handle, opens the other and steps in, only to stop short in awe – or is it horror? The living room is a completely mess. There’s dozens of clothes all over the sofa, the floor. There’s a bra hanging from a lamp and a boot on top of the TV.

“Kate?” A crash sounds somewhere in the house and he rushes in, straight to the kitchen where it came from, where he can smell her coming from.

He walks in and comes to a stop by the door. For the first time in his life, utterly speechless.

    “What the hell happened here?”

Annnnd that’s where I’m stopping! HA.

Kate, uncharacteristically nervous, lives up to her end of the bargain with surprisingly good grace and (although she’d never admit it) great anticipation. She and Curran haven’t consummated the step forward their relationship took at the end of Magic Strikes, and who wouldn’t expect all physical appetites to be satisfied at this “serve me in your underwear” dinner?

Curran arrives just before dinner’s out of the oven. Hot flirtation ensues, only to be interrupted by some suitably horrible monster of the week that only Kate can see. Kate, who had been taking dinner out of the oven when it appeared, kills said monster, but gets burned by the hot fat from the roasting pan in the process. The mood is significantly subdued thereafter, and sputters out completely when Curran insists she see Dr. Doolittle. Neither of them care to explain how she came to be to be cooking in her underwear…

Kate is nervously awaiting D-Day. Eight weeks passed by all too quickly. She buys all the things she needs, cleans obsessively, and frets herself into insomnia. The day has finally arrived. She is starting to make dinner, while the tech is up. The phone rings. She isn’t sure if she should get the phone or not. What if Curran is calling to cancel. One could only hope. After five rings, Kate answers the phone. It’s Andrea calling to say Raphael has been kidnapped. Oh great. She hangs up the phone after promising to help Andrea. The phone rings again. Who the hell is it now? Kate answers grumbling. It’s Aunt B. Curran can’t be reached and Raphael has been kidnapped. Well, shit. The dinner is going to have to wait.

Kate arrives home, bruised, battered, and bloody. Curran is sitting in her kitchen, seething. He asks where his dinner is. Kate tells him where he can stuff it. Curran breaks some furniture and leaves, vowing that Kate owes him and a promise is a promise. There will be no panties allowed for their dinner. Kate curses and is secretly a little excited about the prospect. Although she would never ever tell Curran that…..

My first thought was that dinner could be fairly innocuous if Kate just invited Julie along for dinner. Nowhere did the bet say she had to make dinner only for him.

But the whole being naked and/or being in your undies unfortunately cancels that idea.

    I’ll think of something else.

    Okay here goes.
I don’t think the prologue will have anything to do with the dinner ;) Instead will be about the next adventure/misadventure to happen to Kate with maybe a sly one liner about the dinner.
Something along the lines of how she hears about what she needs to do now. Brain has gone to mush though so thats it really (my brain that ist)

Kate decides to fulfill the promise made and follows Curran’s demands with minor grumbles. When he arrives, he’s at first pleased by how she is bowing to his wishes and then almost immediately demands to know what the hell happened to her because she never ever does exactly what he says. Kate tries to play it off as a ‘bet is a bet’ and offers him dessert. Still suspicious he takes the proffered pie slice and watches her every movement. Unfortunately for him she’s laced the pie, dinner and his drink with heavy doses of sleeping pills (how much would it take anyhow? I mean he’s gotta have a pretty high metabolism) as she begins to see his eyelids droop she tells him that she’s going to do something highly reckless that he had previously told her not to do and he can’t stop her now.

Chapter one to so and so chapter is then set before the date, leading up to it and when we catch up to it, unfortunately for Kate, she misjudged the amount of sleeping pills needed and he’s only drowsy, not sleepy and stops her anyhow with some wicked kisses and promises of even wickeder pleasures (but doesn’t fulfill).

I predict that they will FINALLY get it on, only to have it end badly because they’re interrupted (as per usual). Also, Kate can’t cook which will make for some interesting food issues. Either that or Curran is allergic to what she makes for dinner and ends up having a bad reaction, goes to hospital and then spends the rest of the book telling her that she tried to kill him. Ah…I can see it now. LOL! :D

Ohhhh, it’s fun to think of possible scenes. Though I’m pretty sure the prologue is not going to be like that AT ALL, I had fun with this little thing :D

    ————-__________————-

“Boone’s Sangria?” He glanced at the bottle on the dinner table. “Are you serious?”
I gave him as sly a smile as I could manage wearing only my underwear. The one with the famous bow. “You never specified drinks.”

“Venison, apple pie and Boone’s Sangria.” He shook his head, gold sparks dancing in his eyes. “You’re a study in contradiction, Kate.”

    “I aim to please.”

“Is that so?” His voice had deepened and his eyes flashed molten gold.
“Ah…” I really had set myself up for that one. “Contradiction-wise. That’s what I meant.”

He winked at me and warmth pooled where it had no business pooling. Damn cat.

    Hm…Let’s see…

Curran arrives for dinner. Attitude: Smug.

Kate has fixed dinner as specified. Attitude: Defiant.
(She’s dressed in Curran’s favorite panties and an undershirt).

Dinner progresses some with Curran making witty comments designed and effective in getting Kate’s back up. Kate responds with beautiful one liners showing she’s getting more miffed.

Phone call: Andrea calling saying she needs backup for an emergency. (Unplanned I assure you..yeah right…)

Kate’s turn to be smug as she dresses in 3 minutes flat and walks off with a warning for Curran to clean up the mess. She only promised to cook and serve it after all. And not to leave the pie pan empty in the fridge again. Where did he learn his manners.

    …………………………….

    Well that’s my suggestion. :D

“He came for me,” Kate mumbled to herself for what seemed like the hundreth time that day. She was finally done with all the food and had it in the oven to keep warm.

Honestly, he wouldn’t have risked his life and the lives of his people to come rescue someone he only wanted to, as Raphael had so eloquently put, get in her pants. Right? God, she’d played this argument over in her head so many time in the past eight weeks, she should have had the right answer by now.

She knew what the problem was. She *wanted* him to care. She wanted it to be more than just a passing fancy. So badly, she could taste him. IT! It, not him. Shit. She really had to get a grip. She was going to be doomed if she couldn’t control her hormones, let alone her heart. She knew better. Even if he truly cared, she knew it was best for nothing to happen. Knew it would only end with heartache. She had to be smart. Yeah, smart. She could do this.

Slipping on a new silk robe, that’s dark blue material only came to just above her knees, she went to the living room to wait. Smart. Where had smart been when she had bought the robe? Or the matching bra that went with it? She sat down on her couch, grabbed a paperback off the coffee table and smacked herself in the forehead with it. If she got any more in over her head, she’d need snorkles.

Two hours later, she placed the book back on the coffee table. Tech was up, so the phone still worked. He was late and no call. Sure, there could have been a valid reason, some emergency, that prevented Curran from calling. A Pack dispute. Maybe a wall had collapsed at Keep. Or maybe there was a dumb blond with bigger boobs who’d never threated to kick his ass and smiled a lot. Either way, his majesty didn’t deem her important enough to send word he wasn’t going to make it.Fine. The was what she wanted anyway. To be forgotten. If Curran never showed his face around her again, she’d be happy. Perfectly fucking happy, thank you very much.

Letting out one small sigh, she got up off the couch and went to rummage through the wastebasket in her bedroom for the sales tag and receipt to the robe.

    *********

basically, I don’t think we’re going to get the dinner we all want. I’m betting Curran is a no show and we don’t get the explanation until later on in the book. Please forgive grammar/spelling mistakes. it’s after midnight and I’m trying to entertain a teething baby. :-)

Kate is fully dressed, though she does have the underwear on underneath. She thinks Curran can just deal with it, she made his dinner (and didn’t even poison it, which she seriously considered) so he’ll have to live with not getting everything he wants. She nervous about being left alone with him and doesn’t quite trust herself, and really doesn’t trust him. So she is praying that something comes up at the last moment so she’ll be able to get out of the dinner. She knows that if it isn’t an on the spot emergency he’ll just hunt her down and demand she get naked so she’s waiting for the valid excuse. What she really wants to do instead is to just send him the dinner with a photo and run away, but he’ll hunt her down for that too, and she’ll have given him something he could keep and pull out for later and that’s not acceptable.

So she’s still there when Curran arrives, but just barely. She’s still hoping for something to happen when they banter back and forth and go to sit down. Curran is flirting with her, and she’s doing her very best to ignore it and make him mad so he’ll stop but it’s not working. They start to eat but Kate’s prayers are heard, and they both get called away. Curran tells Kate that they’re not done and Kate says something like he wishes. He tells her that they’ll finish it later and they part ways.

Kate is fixing Curran’s plate with increasing thoughts of spitting in his food because he keeps leering at her. Her temper flares every time he looks up, checks her out, smirks and playful gold flecks dance in his eyes. As dinner continues she is irritated with herself that despite her displeasure at having to serve dinner in her bra and panties/naked, she still wants to jump his leering, smirking bones.

A commotion begins to make itself known outside. As the noises become louder and more intense Kate and Curran check out what the sound is from the balcony. Once outside they see several pack members (those Curran assigned to be silent and invisible while guarding the building in order to have an uninterrupted evening), a handful of large nasty beasties and a poodle attacking one another. The poodle seems to be attacking only the beasties, but steering as clear as possible from the Pack. Curran pulls his shirt off, throws it to Kate to put on (she is practically naked after all) and precedes to make his way down to the struggle. Kate puts Curran’s shirt on, taking a brief moment to appreciate Curran’s yummy manly scent, swings around to grab her sword and is only a step behind Curran as he rushes down the stairs.

After a kick butt show down once Curran and Kate are on the scene all the large nasty beasties are dead, the Pack spill the beans to Curran about what the commotion was all about and Kate gains an attack poodle.

    Second scenario

Curran arrives and after seeing Kate in her panties with the blue bow he strips down to his jungle print briefs and sits down at the table and starts eating. Currant looks up at kate who is standing there with her mouth wide open and says he didn’t want her to feel lonely. The doorbell rings and it is Raphael and Andrea. Raphael accesses the situation and quickly sheds his clothes down to his boxers decorated with little lambs and looks at Andrea……………………

She goes out, gets all beat up and bloody, Little bastards are tough. When she comes back, Curran is in her apartment, sitting at the table.

    “Where’s my apple pie?”

    “It was right on the…”

    The pie pan is gone.

Kate narrows an eye and stares at curran who is the soul of innocence (yeah and pigs don’t fly). she starts to search the kitchen while he crosses his arms and gives her a smug grin.

Kate looks at the clock for the hundredth time, then looked down at her attire- or lack thereof. She had cooked the damn dinner, put on the ridiculous underwear and was ready to serve it to Curran just as promised. She wanted to kick herself for her utter stupidity. “I’ll cook you dinner naked” she mocked. When was she going to learn to keep her mouth shut? And the damn Beast Lord was late.Yeah, big surprise there.

There was a knock on the door and Kate nearly jumped out of her skin. The horde of butterflies that were lodge in her stomach started to flutter like mad. Deep breaths. She could do this. No sex. No drugging kisses. And no melting. She was going to serve him his dinner and he was going to leave. End of story.

Kate swung the door open, only to have Andrea on the other side of the threshold. One look at Kate’s underwear and Andrea burst out laughing. Kate grabbed her best friend by the arm and dragged her inside, not willing to showcase her taste in lingerie to her neighbors.

While Andrea was still on the floor laughing her ass off, another knock sounded at the door. Kate gritted her teeth and went to open it.
It was Raphael. Just her luck.

****After that, pretty much all of Kate’s friends end up in her living room, including Curran, with Kate still in her underwear. They have a major problem to deal with. lol

I would have to go with a non-dinner scene as everyone is expecting it and I am sure that Ilona and Gorden had the greatest of fun planning the unexpexted to start this next book so this is my short take.

Kate doesn’t even get as far as cooking dinner for Curren. I think that just as she is contemplating it. sitting at her desk at the Order, Nick surfaces, has an interesting line on Roland’s latest project to wipe out the Pack. As it affects the Pack and Curren, who she doesn’t want to see hurt, she decides to go and fight all by herself.

    Dinner never even gets cooked.

Not sure though – will have to wait. Sigh!

“I dont recall meantioning an apron Kate” he said sitting at the table.
“Im wearing it incase i spill anything on myself your highness!” i growled placing the plate infront of him. The urge to throw the food onto his lap flittered across my mind for a moment. I couldnt believe i was actually doing this… i had tried to think of a million ways to get out of this but i guess i owed him. Even if this is strangely pirverted. He saved my life… again!
“I would of licked it off for you if you had!” he smiled breaking a bread roll in half. The thought of Currans tongue on my skin was nearly to much for my knees to handle. I sat down quickly.
“you going to remove it or am i going to do it for you?” A flicker of gold danced acrossed his eyes.
I untied the apron and slid the cord over my head. Currans mouth curled into a smile.
“Its not poliet to stare!” i said throwing the apron on the floor.

Kate cooks dinner–with a side of peas because she doesn’t want everything to be too perfect. She wears panties and matching top , but she doesn’t wear the blue ones. Curran is irked, but he offers Kate a bite from his plate. Kate refuses, but flirting ensues until the phone rings. Julie and/or Derek is having a problem or missing because everyone knows when the ‘adults’ are about to smex the kids show up with a problem.

Haha, I thought of something else::

They sat on my bed, right next to Slayer. The infamous undies sat closet to me. I blinked at them, hoping that when my eyes opened they would have miraculously disappeared.
“I could cut the bow off.” I said in a defeated voice, for the past eight weeks plans to get out of this, to have this dinner early at times of complete weakness, have eluded. If it was early, I could get it over with. . .
I yanked the undies and the bra off the bed and marched towards the bathroom, I could flush them down the toilet, call and say I broke my toilet and he could not come. The Beast Lord not come because the toilet was broken? He’d say and I’d just have a broken toilet.
I threw the offending garments at the shower curtain before marching into the kitchen. They could stay there.
Frowning down at the note, which I pulled from the garbage to get the menu ages ago, than at the apple pie. Before turning back around just in time for the phone to ring.
    “Kate Daniels.” I snapped.
    “Kate, did I interrupt something?”
My lips curled as the idea hit me like a train. “Saiman, no, what are you doing this evening?”

I laid the counter with the food. It looked like a feast for a fool. And I was the fool. Venison and lamb steaks were piled on to several plates, corn (which was not on the cob) was in a bowl big enough to fit a baby in. . .or a head. One of the large bags of potatoes was bought for the making of baked potatoes, honey butter sat next to it in a ugly tub. Five apple pies were cooling near the window, which was open. And in the freezer was a large bucket of Rockey Road Ice Cream.
“He never said specifically *what* kind of ice cream.” I said, shedding my clothes in my bedroom. The a knock echoed through the apartment. I answered the door, blue panties and a black bra. Raphael stood there, with Derek and Andrea.
Derek covered his mouth to stop the laughs.
Andrea kept her face straight. “Your really wanted us half-naked?”
It did sound wrong that way. “Of course,” I snipped, pushing the door open so they could come in. Derek’s laughter howled through the living room, Raphael fell in tune. Andrea had a gun pointed at my couch and at the upper corner of my living room.
At the vampire, Gastek’s, that I dressed in a large bra and a very large thong.
Saiman lounged on my couch, licking ice cream from his pointer finger in nothing but a pair of dark blue velvet undies.
Derek shook his head, shedding his shirt, still laughing, along side Raphael. Andrea marched to my bedroom and came out in a pair of red undies and a matching bra and sat at the kitchen table with a loud sigh.
Minutes later Aunt B and Jim stood in the doorway next, jaws dropping.
“I refuse to loose any clothing.” Jim said instantly. Lo and behold him and Aunt B lost most of their’s as well.
Nick came next, he stayed dressed but sat at the table.

had them all sitting at the table, the vampire on the ceiling when Curran walked in, snarling. Everyone stopped eating, except Nick, Saiman and I.
I smiled up at him, “I’m sure there’s enough for you.” I said, nodding to what was left over on the counter. “What?” I asked around a mouthful of corn, “One, I am in my undies. Two, they didn’t have enough corn on the cob. Check the fridge, there is one for you though.” He snarled.

Kate prepares the meal as planned but even though she serves it in her underwear she puts on a robe soon after.

He objects and she growls, “The deal was I’d serve dinner in my underwear.”

She wants to leave after she “serves” him but he convinces her to stay, just to talk. She grudgingly accedes and sits as far from him as the table allows. They start talking and he starts bantering with her in his cocky way about how they should probably be together. Kate gets annoyed and searching for something to reinforce to herself all the reasons they shouldn’t be together she asks him…

“How many women have you slept with?”

    He grimaced. “Less than twenty.”

    “Would you care to elaborate?”

    He mulled it over. “Eighteen.”

“And how many of them lived in the Keep with you?”

The answer came a little quicker. “Seven, but none shared my rooms.”

“What do you mean, they didn’t share your rooms? Where did you…”

    “In their quarters.”

I laughed. “Oh, so you graced them with your nocturnal presence, Your Majesty? Like Zeus, in a blaze of golden light?”

He showed me the edge of his teeth. “They liked it.”

    —-

Kate rolls her eyes, and laughing picks up her plate and as she’s going to leave Curran stops her.

Annoyed and feeling she was pretty much right about him Kate tells Curran precisely why a guy that’s been with 18 women and has never been in a real relationship is not the type of guy that has “commitment” or “maturity” spelled all over him (or something to that effect).

He smiles at her and for once since she’s met him he stops being cocky and tells her he’s serious about her. Kate’s melting and he draws close to her and kisses her lightly and tenderly on the lips. And just as he thinks Kate’s going to give in Kate stops him and tells him to get out.

I predict that Kate will go to visit Julie during the night of the dinner and stay down there until the next day ((or go anywhere out of Atlanta)). Curran shows up at Kate’s expecting her to be there in her blue bra and panties with dinner all made. He knocks on the door, calls, and breaks in to find Kate is not there without a note or any indication of where she is. Pissed off, he goes back to the Keep asking Jim, Derek, Doolittle, and anyone else who knows Kate where she might be. The next day, Kate comes back and spends all day avoiding calls from Curran.

the dinner will start as planned after wich kate dresses. (serve dinner naked not eat it naked, etc)
during dinner they infuriate each other. (kate’s big mouth, etc)
just as they are about to finnish each other of there’s a big crisis.

Well, at least she knew what happened to that last piece of pie, Kate mused as she was taking an apple pie out of the oven. The dinner was ready, at least it wasn’t sausage, no thanks to Jim and Andrea. Kate still was not sure about the whole naked or underwear part, but she figued she would cross that bridge when she came to it. A promise is a promise after all and she had too much pride (and secretly was excited much to her dismay) to back out on it. The eight weeks had flown by, Kate wondered what all that heavy work on the Keep had done to Curran’s already much too tempting body. Most of her wanted to find out.

At 10 minutes to eight, Kate was pacing around the apartment, she could not believe that the Beast Lord, her own personal stalker/ saver/ homicidal maniac/ fantasy for the last eight weeks was going to come through that door in ten minutes and they would be alone. That thought brought visions of the last time they were alone in the hot tub…. no,no, thinking that way we won’t make it through the rolls.

At eight o’clock, Curran came through the door. Just broke in like usual, how does he do that?! He looked too good, just wearing jeans and a t-shirt that showed off how tempting he was. Kate looked into those grey eyes saw the familiar gold sparks that sent warm shivers down her spine and realized that no matter the bet, no matter that she was just a conquest to him, she wanted him. She just hoped her heart would survive.
