First episode promised me crystalline vampires, lots of shooting, and coolness a la Vampire Hunter D. The next three episodes delivered a sappy mafia drama. WTF?
I notice the word meter says 56% done. YEAH!
But the date says 11-16. I’d swear yesterday was Friday the 13th. Did I party way too hard and over-sleep?
=A
It is a Japanese anime. I agree, that Gungrave was problematic. Devil May Cry, on the otherhand, should succeed where Gungrave fails. It’s like Gungrave and Vampire Hunter D. It differs only in that it substitutes devils for vampires. Dante is half devil. You’ll enjoy his suave and sarcastic attitude.
My boyfriend keeps trying to get me to watch Gungrave. It’s essentially a revenge plot, so apparently there’s some complicated setup that happens so we can watch the depth of the betrayal that happens. I heard it’s quite moving once you get into it.
Gungrave anime was thinly-veiled, sexless, male/male romance.
Haven’t played the game.
If you’re looking for awesome vampires and shooting, I recommend Hellsing (the OVAs are better than the series). The manga started cool, but ended with major suck.
For pulpy mafia awesomeness, immortals, and 1930s coolness, check out Baccano! The first episode is hard to follow, but it gets better.
If you just want cool shooting and organized crime, no supernatural ties, go for Black Lagoon.
I second Black Lagoon. Its a great gun and action show. Fast paced and with a fun, upbeat humor.

Gungrave is a little hard to get into, but once you do, it’s actually quite well done. So sad….:( Still, I like the action in Devil May Cry better. Dante rules.
How do you send a killer to the grave when he’s already dead?
Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving–leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.
Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity–forever. But one wrong step and they’ll be digging their own graves.

Berserk is good in a gory way and is about demons
