Small Happy Vices.

small-happy-vices

I like yarn.  Yarn is so pretty.  yarnThere is yellow yarn, and pink yarn, and that purple thing in the back is the yarn Gordon’s Aunt gave me, because she likes yarn also and she buys it but doesn’t always use it.

By the way, someone offered me a lovely hand-dyed yarn a few days ago and I meant to reply and forgot: I would love to get it, but you have to let me pay you for it.

Yarn is soft and pretty and there is something so comforting about having a stash of it.  I am not even sure why it makes feel good, but it does.  I actually got pissy this morning because I was looking for a particular yarn, Fortissima Mexico, (I saw it on Yarn Harlot, yep reading craft blogs, there is no hope now) and couldn’t find it a the price I wanted.  I am also cheap, you see.

action1

Gordon’s vice.

He has, oh I don’t know, probably around half a thousand at least, probably more.  He’s been collecting them since childhood.  This is just a tiny sample of his collection and he is now giving me crap about it, because it doesn’t adequately showcase it.  :eye roll:

There are the twelve inch figures, and the heavy weights and the light weights, and the GI Joe guys, and the guys in the garage…  Certain things are very important, like weight class, and the number of points of articulation.  Guess what he’s getting for Christmas?

Of course,  there is also our drug of choice.

We probably drink about three teapots a day, often more. tea1

Green Tea, black tea, herbal tea, horrifying mix of, it’s all good.

Tea is very comforting to me.  When I was a little kid, I would get up in the morning, drink strong black tea, have a sandwich, usually bolonga, sometimes ham, and get my butt off to school.

Loose tea is the best, I think, but Gordon kind of hates it , because our kettle, even though it has a built-in sieve, ustea2ually lets a few tea leaves through and it drives him nuts.

The only thing that might be better than tea is hot coca, but I can’t have any. Coca must have sugar in it, and sugar and I don’t play nice.  Sugar-free coca might be a crime against nature and I refuse to drink it.

Mmm, I need another cup of tea.

Do you have small comforting vices? Own up.  And books don’t count – that’s too easy.

Oh my goodness you’re right, there must be nearly half a dozen or more action figures in that picture. Clearly I am out of control. Also the the little wolf looking thing is yours. Those are just the figures I had at the desk and moved to the bedroom. Obviously, their battle with the giant electric razor was ill advised.

For me, it’s single malt scotch. I started drinking straight vodka at conventions years ago as it’s easier for me to know when to quit. Along the way I was tempted into single malt and now I’m hooked. I like the smokier (peatier) varieties such as Talisker and Laphroaig with the occasional Oban and Aberlour A’bunadh to change up the mix. Since it’s so expensive at the hotels, I usually tote along a small flask. A few of my writer buddies are addicts so we have closed door, invitation-only cigar and single malt gatherings. Insider info is traded and the whiskey savored. Darn, how long before I get to go another convention?

The birds in the backyard. I love them. We have multiple feeders, they make an unholy mess, but it’s worth it. I love their sounds.

What adds to my enjoyment is walking back, startling them, and having about 30 little birds take flight. Heh.

One clarification, it’s an expensive little vice, we spend over $20 a week on the feed. My husband is picky on what it is, and I think every bird for a mile knows we have a stash.

It sounds so girly, but lip gloss. I cannot stand to have dry lips and at one point in my teenage-years I was addicted to a specific brand/flavor. Now I just buy what I think can help.

I was going to guesstimate that I have about 4 different kinds in my purse, but for the sake of accuracy (and to show how insane I am), I decided to count. I have EIGHT (EIGHT!) different lip gloss/Chap Stick items in my purse!

1 WetSlicks, 2 Softlips (Cherry and Strawberry), 1 Blistex, 1 Grape Chap Stick, 1 Revlon (For the Cure), 1 Vaseline Lip Therapy, and 1 generic in Vanilla Sugar Cookie.

Yarn is pretty and soft and fun to touch… but I have no clue what to do with after that other than give to kits to play with.

I am right there with you with the teas. I love them! Big Twinings fan too (love their Irish Breakfast one). Right now I am gaga over the MarketSpice ™ Cinnamon-Orange tea I picked up at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Whenever I brew a cup at work people start asking “what smells like Christmas?” So good tasting too.

    My vices:
    * tea (duh)
    * books (I’m like a crack whore when I am in a book store. Which is why my TBR pile is HUGE!)
    * dragons (have a showcase for the ones I have collected over the years. Like the one-of-a-kind handmade ones best, not the mass market ones)

I am right there with you on the tea vice, but I am a real snob about it. I only drink loose leaf and I need to have like 40 different kinds of it. Drives my husband nuts :-)

My other huge vice is clothing. I would collect it if I could, I would wear new clothes everyday if I could. I love them. I also get attached to clothing, so as you can imagine my closet is horribly crowded. But I just have so much fun with it..

My vice is my craft room…I have many, many half-started, or even not-started crafts, just in case I feel like working on them someday. Glass crafts, tile crafts, fabric crafts, etc. I probably have more cross stitch projects than I will ever finish. I’ve started limiting my purchase of them. Hubby is offering to buy garage-like shelving so we will be able to walk through the room.

Vices? I have no vices? Who started the rumor that I have vices?

OK…well…I might have a wee bit of a bread fixation. I love bread. I don’t need a lot of it, just a slice (with butter or without – if the bread is tasty then it matters not at all) but good bread is a must. We usually have at least three or four different kinds of bread in the house at any given moment.

A close second is pasta. I adore pasta in just about all of its forms. However, since my fiance was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, we have cut out the pasta dinners at home and we rarely go to Italian places any more. I miss my pasta a bit but it’s a small sacrifice to make for the health of a loved one.

I understand about the yarn. I do fabric. Do I have time/space to sew? NO! but I keep buying it.
Beading – I do occasionally work on projects and even finish them.
1/6 scale figures and accessories – though I haven’t been at it near as long as Gordon.
Writing. I’ve actually sold 3 short stories at professional rates (gasp!)
Tea, but only the herbal kind. (I miss caffeine.)
My biggest vices though are reading and school….

Unfortunately, I share the lipgloss addiction but the worst, by far, is my addiction to pens. I don’t need those fancy expensive ones but I have zillions of others. I’m always trolling office supply stores and the pen aisle at Target and other stores for new pens. A small thing but it makes me happy.

I can’t have books? But, without books I don’t really have a vice. There is one thing I love, but can only get at this time of year, bordeaux bars from See’s candy. Gah. Love them. Um, the eight indoor cats we have don’t count, right? And the fact that I can’t NOT feed the strays outside? Who am I kidding, I guess I’m loaded with vices. *G*

    Ooo I have three!

    1. Books, I used to hord them like crazy, even if I knew I wasn’t going to read it again I would keep them. But my husband made me break down and admit I didn’t need those ones and sold them. I was so proud of myself ^_^

    2. Art/craft supplies, because I love to draw. I have like ten different sketchbooks, some I made and some I haven’t even touched yet. Knowing they are there is a comfort. Also I love beads, I usually don’t even do anything with them, just knowing I have pretty, colorful, shiny beads makes me happy.

    3. Dragons. I used to draw them 24/7 and pick up any that I could take home. I get very upset when I see one that I feel is anatomically incorrect. They are my love and nothing is better then them!

I have an espresso maker. It is my precious. It wakes me up in the mornings, but it is a jealous mistress. It occasionally keeps me up until one a.m. since caffeine will keep me up for at least six hours after I drink it. But it’s soooo good. I can’t help myself.
    -
I like yarn. I buy yarn that is pretty and soft, and then when it comes time to make something, I think “oh, I can’t waste this nice yarn on this silly hat!” or perhaps it’s not the right color…so I have nice yarn that won’t get used unless I sit down with the yarn in hand and a collection of patterns and force myself to pick something for it.
    -
I don’t play as many video games as I think I do. I know this because I just realized that the last video game I got was for Christmas last year, and I am still happy playing what I have.

As for yarn… well… uhm… I love yarn. I dye yarn too, which gets me in the most trouble, because I can buy the cheap naked yarn and then dye it into prettier yarn… which I never use… because its too pretty! Its a problem, I know this. My stash is in four 40 gallon Rubbermaid tubs in the closet. Well most of it is in there. Some of its in bags and totes around the apartment too.

Mmm… dangerous question. I like colored pens. Gel pens, sparkly pens, rollerball. You name it. I’ve got every color under the rainbow and THEN some.

Cleaning out my house and car? I’ve got a LOT of sunglasses, some cheap, some designer, some a little ugly, some a little sparkly.

Oh and umm.. I like those soft sweater like socks. They’re usually longer, more wildly colored. Those are a weakness. I have a few pairs and always can use more.

    - Good chocolate (especially truffles), all by itself, to be savoured slowly.
    - Any sort of warm drink. I love hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot cider (not made from powder), etc. Best is when I can combine, such as mint hot chocolate and coffee together. :-)

Okay aside from books (which is a given thats why we are all here harhar =P), here are some things that never fails to make me happy/trippy/high:

    1. Nutella – all that chocolate-y goodness–its like kryptonite for me.

    2. Shoes – Like the slogan posted outside my fave shoe shop, “Shoes make me happy. If that makes me superficial then, whatever!”

    3. Coffee – how you feel about Tea, Ilona, is like how I feel about coffee =)

    4. Seaweed flavored Pringles – I am not sure if this is available outside Asia, I swear its like crack. Once you pop you can’t stop. Pringles + (insert fave author’s book) = Pure Win

    5. Korean/Japanese drama and music – This is a world on its own and its so addicting. Aside from a few US TV shows that I follow like CSI, Bones, and Supernatural, my TV line up is mostly composed of korean and japanese rom/coms and action dramas filled with hot guys who are bad ass and can still look pretty.
