Knitting Crisis

knitting-crisis

I am allowed to order one magazine for myself this year.  (Everybody gets one.)

I want a knitting magazine.  I don’t know which one to order.  Vogue, Knit N Style, Interweave?

What are your favorites?

GO TO THE LIBRARY AND CHECK OUT THE MAGAZINES THERE. FIND ONE YOU REALLY LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE TO IT. IT WILL KEEP YOU FROM SUBSCRIBING TO A BOMB IF YOU DON’T GET ANY OTHER REPLYS.

I am new to knitting magazines also. I get Interweave Knits and Creative Knitting and like them both so far.

They both offer free trial issues on their websites.

Oh, I forgot. There is also a free online knitting magazine at Knitty.com

Ok, this is my honest opinion on these…

Vogue is to chichi to be real knits most of the time. They have the types of knits that would be in regular Vogue for the most part and they aren’t always wearable.

Knit N Style has never really inspired me, but the contents are wearable and some are quite nice.

Interweave Knits used to be my mag of choice, but, and it pains me to say this because the Editor used to be in my knitting group and I think she’s a great person…. it’s kinda blah these days.
The knits in it are wearable, and the articles are good, but I felt like after a few years of subbing, it was all just repeating itself over and over.

Your mileage may vary of course.

I just started knitting! Any good sites or tips you can offer?

Side note: My fingers are killing me!

I really enjoy “Knit ’till you want to stab yourself with the needle”. The articles are enlightening. :-)

    What Laura said, mostly. (:
    Still..
Interweave all the way. And you can get their back issues electronically now.

I also really like the one I get from TKGA (Cast On, I think) It is incredibly in-depth and technical. The patterns aren’t always something I have to knit RIGHT NOW, but I learn a lot.

    Are you on Ravelry?

Being in England, I get a few different knitting magazines. I like Simply Knitting :)

(*pokes Ilona for interview reply.* I’m not reviewing Edge until I get your answers!)

Oh Ilona, you’ve done it now.

Forget tea and chocolate – we can get magazines subscriptions and they are delivered direct bwahahahaha.

Your poor postman will hate you for all the knitting magazines fans send you through the post :-)

    I’m just jealous because I can’t knit

My husband bought me a copy of Yarn Forward for Christmas and it seems interesting.

I’d go with Interweave, 100%– of course, I’m a devotee to Samurai, so, well, I’m biased:-)

I like the idea of being allowed one magazine subscription a year. I do that too, nothing to do with knitting tho, but sci fi and fantasy – Interzone (http://ttapress.com/interzone/about/).
They are very supportive of new writers too, from UK and USA :)

Interweave, but I like the back issues more than the current ones. It has a good mix of skill levels and things I can actually wear.

I’ve let both Interweave and Vogue lapse but will still pick up an Interweave from the store if it is good. I was also gifted a Rowan subscription a few years back and while it is gorgeous, it wasn’t as useful for me.

If I could get a Phildar subscription, I would. They don’t distribute stateside.

interweave is the way to go. Even though some issues can be hit or miss, there is usually at least one great pattern in each one. http://www.knitty.com and http://www.ravelry.com are two great sources of patterns (knitty’s are all free and you can find lot’s of free ones on Ravelry too) Good luck!
