D. asks:
I thought Kate was twenty five at the start of Magic Bites?
Nope. Check page 6:
“In a few weeks you’ll turn twenty five.”
To be able to set the birthday story sometime before Magic Strikes, I cheated a bit and interpreted that “few weeks” as several months.
That said, I’m not really happy with the way the story is going. It doesn’t have a snap to it. So we’ll probably try something else. Short stories are very difficult to write, for some odd reason.

Word. I can write 30k as part of a novel faster than I can write a 3k short story.
Aww, I kinda liked the wimpy manticore.
I liked it, but oh well. If it’s not gelling sometimes you just have to throw it out and mix up a new batch.
Love the side bar ad! Release date of Magic Bleeds, eh? *plots*
You tell beautiful stories, fleshing out every detail. That is one reason we love reading you guys books. So a short story which by its own nature depends on brevity does not allow that fleshing out. I don’t know alot of authors who can do both well. And here you are telling a story in under 20 pages. And even those who do it well, don’t craft them over night. An example would be how Lois Bujold did it with Borders of Infinity. And I think that was a crafted over months, not handed up to hungry story fiends like ourselves over night. So don’t beat yourself up, the story is entertaining…and interesting. I personally would love to see where you are going with it!
I love the first part of the birthday story. A wimpy flesh eating manticore and Kate in such a mood…. great.
I would really like to read the second part.
But if does not work for you I will be happy with anything else
But, but..I love the manticore. Ok, ok your story and I will understand if you don’t feel too good about continuing it. Thank you so much for writing all these POV’s and little stories for us in between the bookwriting, moving and living your probably already pretty full life. Whatever you write, I’ll be exstatic to read it!
We love anything you can create in your wonderful, creative heads (2 are better than 1). I too, like the manticores – I love when abused creatures are able to attack their abusers (instant karma). But it is your story, so whatever you feel is best for it.
Thank you so much for all the little extras – they do keep us going between the books.
Aw
But Kate is listed as 26 under her Bio. How many years have passed from book 1 to book 3?
They may be harder to write but I must say, you are excellent at them. Slient Blade… Whoa and Damn. Loved it!
You have the patience of a saint for responding politely to that question.
Obviously what D meant to say was ‘thank-you so much for taking time that could have been spent on work you actually get paid for or with your family and instead indulging your fans’.
Sorry, but those type of posts in response to a free gift make me cringe…Gift-horse? Mouth? Anyone?
I’m worried that one of these days I’ll visit the blog and you will have had enough and instead of the snippets and POVs and short stories we have been spoiled with there will be a 5 week competition for a book mark with a lion on it
First, it is your story, so you do what you have to do. That said, love the manticore and hope it makes it into the final birthday short. Thanks so much for writing all these little short and POVs for us. You guys spoil us and we are grateful for it.
