When we dance

when-we-dance

I do the Curran POV’s sometimes, and I think people like them because you see and hear what he is thinking.  In the books what you get it Kate’s take on the Beast Lord.  I was listening to Sting this morning and reading the galleys for Bayou Moon when a song came on and really moved me.

It was “When we Dance” by Sting.  It made me think of Curran seeing Kate with Saiman.  He was not just mad, he was at first stunned and to be honest, deeply hurt at what he saw as a betrayal.  Something along the lines of  “I loved you and thought you loved me, how could you be with him?”

The video is stunning, but what got me was the lyrics.  At 2:32 he tells her “he won’t love you like I loved you, he won’t care for you this way, he’ll mistreat you if you stay.”

That is pretty much exactly what Curran would have said to Kate, if he could.  At least he would try, sadly it would come out more as a roar.  I know this is mostly likely not how a lot of you picture Curran, but it is how I see him, or how he is in my head.  When Ilona writes the books, she says she sees it in her head like a movie, for me I guess I hear music, probably because I listen to it while writing and editing.  Is there a song or video that makes you think of Kate and Curran?  Let me know, I am terribly curious how other people see them.

one week by barenaked ladies. its SO their song.

i mean, “I have the tendency to take off my shirt” – so curran. and “we realised we were both to blame, but what could we do” – their fight about the clusterfuck that was dinner…

and it is a song about a couple who fights, break up, make up and do it all over again in a week.

Ditto!!! The line about shirt removal makes sense in light of the lyric right before: “I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve.” Kate makes Curran lose his shirt and his mind! lol

The best part is when it says, “It’s been one week since you looked at me, threw your arms in the air and said ‘You’re crazy.’ Five days since you tackled me, I’ve still got the rug burns on both my knees.”

Exasperation. Craziness. Tackling. Totally Kate and Curran.

Little Lion Man – Mumford and Sons

That one basically because I heard it with a friend the day kate 4 was delivered, and I was so so so so waiting for that book to come, and words like ‘sword’ ‘lion’ ‘mate’ etc etc send me over the edge into a long monologue about how I yearn for the book, and then that song ….

Well, and then this song. I never heard it before now, but this is amazing. This is their song. WOW. Now I’m of to buy it (:

Peter Gabriel’s Us album, pretty much any song, but especially “Come Talk to Me” and “Secret World”.

    From “Secret World”:

I stood in this sunsheltered place
‘Til I could see the face behind the face
All that had gone before had left no trace

    Down by the railway siding
In our secret world, we were colliding
All the places we were hiding love
What was it we were thinking of?

So I watch you wash your hair
    Underwater, unaware
And the plane flies through the air
Did you think you didn’t have to choose it
That I alone could win or lose it
In all the places we were hiding love
What was it we were thinking of?

In this house of make believe
Divided in two, like Adam and Eve
You put out and I recieve

    [Chorus:]

With no guilt and no shame, no sorrow or blame
Whatever it is, we are all the same

Making it up in our secret world [x3]
    Shaking it up
    Breaking it up
Making it up in our secret world

Seeing things that were not there
On a wing on a prayer
    In this state of disrepair

It all sounds very plausible Curran POV to me. The whole Us album is very raw, exposed and vulnerable, but masculine. A lot like Curran in Kate 4.

The relationship between the two of them make me think of a new french song called “Je Sais” by Shy’M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-kG1_HN7I0). She basically tells him that she knows that she makes him go completely mad but she also knows that he loves her like that because she is the only one who does that to him. For me it fits Kate and Curran to a T (minus the pop style of the song !).

But to be honest a lot of things make me think about them !!!

Unthinkable by Alicia Keys always reminds me of Magic Bleeds:

You give me a feeling that I never felt before
And I deserve it, I think I deserve it
It’s becoming something that’s impossible to ignore
    And I can’t take it

    I was wondering maybe
Could I make you my baby
If we do the unthinkable would it make us look crazy
If you ask me I’m ready

If you ask me I’m ready

Some of the lyrics from ‘A case of you’ by Joni Mitchell

You’re in my blood like holy water
    You taste so bitter
    And so Sweet

Oh, I could drink a case of you
and i would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

(and later on in the song)

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
    I’m frightened by the devil
And drawn to those that ain’t

I remember that time you told me
    You said
    Love is touching souls.
    Well surely you touched mine
Cos part of you pours out of me
    In these lines
    From time to time.

    (and still later)

    I met a woman
Who had a mouth like yours
She knew your devils and your deeds,
    And she said
    Hold to him
Stay with him if you can
    But be prepared to bleed.

(ok so pretty much the whole song) P.S> I just got my copy of magic bleeds on Saturday and it was worth the wait. Thanks :)

Kiss with a fist by Florence and the machine

    You hit me once
    I hit you back
    You gave a kick
    I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

    [...]

    Your slaps don’t stick
    Your kicks don’t hit
    So we remain the same
    Blood sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don’t fit

A kick in the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better than none

When Kate and Curran first started annoying each other (as they have since minute one… “here, kitty-kitty”, lol!) I thought of the following songs for them:

The More You Ignore Me (the Closer I Get) by Morrissey for Curran – he was like a cat playing with his prey before going in for the kill – Curran was never going to leave Kate alone.

Fast As You Can by Fiona Apple for Kate – this is moreso because of her tendency to push people (men) away from her because of her blood.

I can’t quite think of the right song for the two of them now, because a sentimental or sappy song won’t do. They’re both too strong for anything like that. But then again, an overly possessive or aggressive song won’t do either. Hmm….

I just found a “Goth” group — Anders Manga and their song ‘Heart of Black’ reminds of them. Kate & Curran are perfect for each other especially with their foibles. Lyrics follow:

    I chose the wrong words
    Now I’m left to live
Burdened by the enemy of love
Who’s gone and taken all that’s left
Just need a minute of your time
I can’t take back the words
But if you’ll give, I’ll try to change your mind

    It’s been wicked dull days
    Forbidden lonely nights
The needle pops along the cracks and grooves
    Of a broken hearted 45
    Critical and left for dead
    Another memory that’s lost
    Another letter ripped to shreds

    Wash me in the water
    Cover me in sand
Burn all of the bridges that lead to me
Till the love is washed off in the water
    Covered in the sand
Build the highest wall of flames around me
’til a heart of black is what I have

    No more emotion
    Farewell to pain
    So long to innocence
    No regret remains
    Goodbye to misery
    Desensitized
    Erase all energy
    Paralyzed

    Wash me in the water
    Cover me in sand
Burn all of the bridges that lead to me
Till the love is washed off in the water
    Covered in the sand
Build the highest wall of flames around me
’til a heart of black is what I have

My song choice is a little more random. I stumbled on it by chance, and really got a Kate X Curran thing going on in my head.
It’s called She’s a lady, by forever the sickest kids.
    Lyrics:
I’m in love with a girl I hate
She enjoys pointing out every bad thing about me
I’m in love with a critic and a skeptic, a traitor
I’d trade her in a second

    She’s a backseat driver
    A drama provider
An instant update of the world
    She’s a first-class liar
    A constant forgetter
    She’s attractive but bitter

Did you scream enough to make her cry?
    It’s a turn around
    Turn around
    Baby, don’t return to me
If you think that I’m not worth your time

    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with
    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with

    Take off your shoes
    Come in the room
And baby, let’s try not to argue
    Turn out the lights
    Turn on the radio
How can we fight when I’m too busy loving you?
    I’m too busy loving you
    I’m too busy loving you

Did you scream enough to make her cry?
    It’s a turn around
    Turn around
    Baby, don’t return to me
If you think that I’m not worth your time

    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with
    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with

    Here I am
    There you go again, again
And we will not ever be 18 again
    Again

And I’m worn out of fighting
And every night you leave crying
And I could use some time
    Here I am
    There you go again

So here I am, and I’m dying
    And I’m waiting for you
    Waiting for you
Come back, come back to me
    And I’ll take you gladly
    And I’ll take you anyway

Did you scream enough to make her cry?
    It’s a turn around
    Turn around
    Baby, don’t return to me
If you think that I’m not worth your time (x2)

    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with
    She’s a lady
And ladies shouldn’t be messed with

I find music for Kate all the time…Curran not so much…nothing quite fits.

For Kate when she realizes that she is hurting because Curran stood her up.
    Ghost /Indigo Girls starts out:
There’s a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to from our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever from the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons, shadowing my dreams
(how fitting for them both/ and such a beautiful love song)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NxtFHNqq1Y

Then there is the Kate pity party song
(You know the one she sings every time she expects people to reject her because of her family?)
Road to Dead By Paula Cole
you walk the road to resurrection
and i walk the road to dead
and i`m giving you my devotion
but i walk the road to dead

Oh a Curran song: Pearl Jam Save you (Both him to kate and Kate to him in Magic Bleeds)

Gonna save you f*&#er,….not gonna lose you
Feeling cocky and strong,.. can’t let you go,…
      Too important to me

Too important to us,… we’d be lost without you
Baby, let yourself fall,… I’m right below you now

And f*#k me if I say something you don’t wanna hear
And f*#k if you only hear what you wanna hear
F*#k me if I care,… but I’m not leaving here

You helped me when I was down,… I’ll help when you’re down
Why are you hitting yourself,… c’mon hit me instead

Let’s pick up your will,… it’s grown fat and lazy
I’m sympathetic as well,… don’t go on me now

And I’m not living this life without you, I’m selfist and clear
And you’re not leaving here without me, I don’t wanna be without
My best friend,… wake up to see you could have it all

Cause there is but you,… and something within you
It’s taken control,.. let’s beat it, get up let’s go

Oh you’re in your own world, let’s see the whole world
      Let’s pick up your soul

And f&^k me if I say something you don’t wanna hear
And f*&k me if you only hear the treble in your head
Please help,… me,… to help you,… help yourself

Help me help yourself,… please want me to,… please let me to

      Help you

well, i hear music and see interactions play out like a movie, but a song that i always see for curran and kate is your guardian angel by red jumpsuit apparatus. the lyrics are perfect for them, but when sung it is sweet and very sincere:

    When I see your smile
    Tears run down my face
    I can’t replace
    And now that I’m strong
    I have figured out
    How this world turns cold
and it breaks through my soul
And I know I’ll find deep inside me
    I can be the one

I will never let you fall
I’ll stand up with you forever
I’ll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven

    It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s okay.
    Seasons are changing
    And waves are crashing
And stars are falling all for us
Days grow longer and nights grow shorter
I can show you I’ll be the one

I will never let you fall
I’ll stand up with you forever
I’ll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven

Cuz you’re my, you’re my true love, my whole heart
    Please don’t throw that away
    Cuz I’m here for you
    Please don’t walk away and
    Please tell me you’ll stay

    Use me as you will
Pull my strings just for a thrill
And I know I’ll be okay
Though my skies are turning gray

I will never let you fall
I’ll stand up with you forever
I’ll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven

Airborne Toxic Event’s ‘Sometime around midnight’ For the Curran/ Kate/ Samain restaurant scene:

    And it starts…
    Sometime around midnight
    Or at least that’s when
    You lose yourself
    For a minute or two

    As you stand…
    Under the barlights
And the band plays some song
About forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack
    To her smile
And that white dress she’s wearing
    You haven’t seen her
    For a while

    But you know…
    That she’s watching
    She’s laughing, she’s turning
She’s holding her tonic like a cross
    The room suddenly spinning
She walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms

    And so there’s a change…
    In your emotions
And all of these memories come rushing
Like feral waves to your mind
Of the curl of your bodies
    Like two perfect circles entwined
And you feel hopeless, and homeless
    And lost in the haze
    Of the wine

    And she leaves…
    With someone you don’t know
But she makes sure you saw her
She looks right at you and bolts
As she walks out the door
    Your blood boiling
    Your stomach in ropes
And when your friends say what is it
You look like you’ve seen a ghost

    And you walk…
    Under the streetlights
And you’re too drunk to notice
That everyone is staring at you
And you don’t care what you look like
    The world is falling
    Around you

You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her

And you know that she’ll break you
    In two

For Curran – Halo, by Depeche Mode
    You wear guilt
    Like shackles on your feet
    Like a halo in reverse
    I can feel
    The discomfort in your seat
And in your head it’s worse
    There’s a pain
    A famine in your heart
    An aching to be free
    Can’t you see

    All love’s luxuries
Are here for you and me
    And when our worlds
    They fall apart
When the walls come tumbling in
    Though we may deserve it
    It will be worth it

    Bring your chains
    Your lips of tragedy
    And fall into my arms
    And when our worlds
    They fall apart
When the walls come tumbling in
    Though we may deserve it
    It will be worth it

For Kate – Good Enough, by Evanescence

    Under your spell again
I can’t say no to you
Crave my heart and it’s bleeding in your hand
I can’t say no to you

Shouldn’t let you torture me so sweetly
Now I can’t let go of this dream
    I can’t breathe but I feel

    Good enough
I feel good enough for you

    Drink up sweet decadence
I can’t say no to you
And I’ve completely lost myself and I don’t mind
I can’t say no to you

Shouldn’t let you conquer me completely
Now I can’t let go of this dream
    Can’t believe that I feel

    Good enough
    I feel good enough
It’s been such a long time coming
    But I feel good

And I’m still waiting for the rain to fall
Pour real life down on me
‘Cause I can’t hold on to anything

    This good enough
    Am I good enough
For you to love me too?

So take care what you ask of me
    ‘Cause I can’t say no

Awesome songs for awesome characters. I love you guys!!

I’ve posted before how I think Ozzy Osbourne’s song I Just Want You fits Kate and Curran to me. Not only is it badass (which I feel a song would have to be to be for them), but it’s also got some romantic lyrics.

    There are no unlockable doors
    There are no unwinable wars
    There are no unrightable wrongs
    Or unsignable songs
    There are no unbeatable odds
    There are no believable gods
    There are no unnameable names
Shall I say it again, yeah
    There are no impossible dreams
    There are no invisible seams
Each night when the day is through
    I don’t ask much
    I just want you
    I just want you
    There are no uncriminal crimes
    There are no unrhymable rhymes
There are no identical twins or
    forgivable sins
    There are no incurable ills
    There are no unkillable thrills
One thing and you know it’s true,
    I don’t ask much

    For Kate and Curran?

Aerosmith’s “Falling in Love (Is So Hard on the Knees) – just the concept that for both of them, this is no easy trip down the Tunnel of Luvvvvv

There are actually a few that pop into my head, but there are two that really make me think of their relationship and they happen to be by nickelback.

The first one is : Figured You Out, and i think it encompasses their relationship throughout the books.

I like your pants around your feet
I like the dirt that’s on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you’re looking up at me
You’re like my favourite damn disease

And I love the places that we go
And I love the people that you know
And I love the way you can’t say no
Too many long lines in a row
I love the powder on your nose

And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out
And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out

I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you’re not impressed,
While you put me to the test
I like the white stains on your dress

And I love the way you pass the check
And I love the good times that you wreck
And I love your lack of self respect
While you’re passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck

And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out
And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out

I love your pants around your feet
And I love the dirt that’s on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you’re looking up at me
You’re like my favourite damn disease

And I hate the places that we go
And I hate the people that you know
And I hate the way you can’t say no
Too many long lines in a row
I hate the powder on your nose

And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out
And now I know who you are
    It wasn’t that hard
    Just to figure you out

The second one is “Someone that you’re with” it makes me think of their relationship in the first book while she’s seeing Crest and he has someone in the apartment above hers reporting back to him.
    I reside in 209, you’re in 208
You moved in last Friday night,
    and I just couldn’t wait
So I tried to call across the hall,
    to ask you out someday
But a lineup formed outside your door, and I was way too late

    [CHORUS]
Well I’d rather start off slow
This whole thing’s like some sort of a race
Instead of winning what I want
I’m sitting here in second place

    Because somewhere
the one I wanna be with’s
    with somebody else
Oh god, I wanna be that
    someone that you’re with
I wanna be that someone that you’re with
And I can talk about it all day long
’til I run out of breath
But I still wanna be that someone that you’re with
I’ve got to be that someone that you’re with
And I’m pacing by the phone
‘Cause I hate to be alone
And if you’re out there with him
somewhere and just about to kiss
God I wanna be that someone that you’re with

Well I hear your favorite songs
    you sing along with everyday
    And I borrow things that
I don’t need for conversation sake
Last night I heard your key,
it hit your lock at 4 AM
Instead of being out with me
you must be out with them

    [CHORUS]

    Because somewhere the one
    I wanna be with’s
    with somebody else
Oh god, I wanna be that someone that you’re with
I wanna be that someone that you’re with
And I can talk about it all day long
’til I run out of breath
But I still wanna be that someone that you’re with
I’ve got to be that someone that you’re with
And I’m pacing by the phone
‘Cause I hate to be alone
And if you’re out there with him
somewhere and just about to kiss
God, I wanna be that someone that you’re with

    Well somewhere the one
    I wanna be with’s
    with somebody else
Oh god, I wanna be that someone that you’re with
And I can talk about it all day long
’til I run out of breath
But I still wanna be that someone that you’re with
I’ve got to be that someone that you’re with
And I’m pacing by the phone
‘Cause I hate to be alone
And if you’re out there with him
somewhere and just about to kiss
God, I’ve got to be that someone that
I wanna be that someone that
I’ve got to be that someone that you’re with

This is Hands Up by Hedley. I’m not sure if anybody has put it up yet.

    Ahh-Yeah
    Oh my God
    Something is wrong
    I’m floatin’ down a river where I don’t belong
    With out you
    ‘Cause if I fall
    With out you
    Now I see
    It’s all clear to me
I could do a lot of things, but I could never be
    With out you
    ‘Cause if I fall
    With out you
And you pick me up when I am down
    (Pick me up)
    And you make me smile
    So hands up
    Take it all away
If I got you then I’ll be ok
    I know, now everybody say
If I got you I like it that way
    Ohhh-ohh
    Oh my God
    Nothing is fine
    I’ll go a little crazy
    ‘Cause I’m losin’ my mind
    With out you
    ‘Cause if I fall
    With out you
    (If I fall)
    Come what may
    All I gotta say
I could have a lot of fun, but I don’t wanna play
    With out you
    ‘Cause if I fall
    With out you
You pick me up when I am down
    (Pick me up now)
    And you make me smile
    So hands up
    Take it all away
If I got you then I’ll be ok
    I know
    Now everybody say
If I got you I like it that way
If I got you I like it
    With out you
    I don’t got a reason
    With out you
    I don’t got a soul
    (I don’t got a soul)
    For all my days
    I live to praise
    You make me wanna
    Scream and shout it out
    It’s all I gotta say
    Ahhh-nahhh
    Hands up
    Take it all away
If I got you then I’ll be ok
    I know
    Now everybody say
If I got you I like it that way
    Hands up
    Take it all away
If I got you then I’ll be ok
    I know
    Now everybody say
If I got you I like it that way
If I got you then I’ll be ok
If I got you I like it that way

Well I’m just adding on that it makes me think of their relationship in the snippet that you stole for us, when they can’t be without eachother.

I’m a little late in posting, just flitting around reading the blogs and enjoying myself.

“Gives you Hell” by All American Rejects reminds me of when Curran “stood up” Kate, from both their perspectives ;)

and the softer side of their relationship, I have to go with Etta James “At last”. A culmination of finally getting there :)
