We received a couple of questions from readers why Small Magics didn’t have any new content. We do have a start of Derek story that we could’ve finished and stuck in there, but we made a deliberate decision not to include new material.
It comes down to ethics. If we included one new story, Derek’s fans would’ve effectively bought that anthology for Derek’s story alone, which would mean that they would pay $2.99 for a single story. A short story is probably worth 99 cents. But for $2.99 it would have to be a novella, closer to 25,000 words, something along the size of Magic Dreams, for example.
I once read a businesswoman speaking about running a small business. The question of how much to charge came up and she said that she increased her prices with each new customer, until one finally blinked when he heard the quote. I used to say that we don’t have fans, we have readers. That changed a little bit. We do have fans and those fans would buy a short story at $2.99 from us and not blink. Some would buy it at $4.99. So we have to be a little more conscious of pricing.
This is why we decided that it would be best to make Small Magics a complete reprint. That way there are no misunderstandings.
