We spent the entire yesterday working out a fight scene. We watched martial arts demonstrations for three hours. Then I got the fun part of experiencing various shoulder and elbow locks, both in applying and being applied to. Because it has to make sense.
Martial arts are not the same as fighting for your life. Do you know how many martial arts demonstrations that are completely useless for fiction there are on Youtube? A lot.
Here is a fun one. What to do if the opponent grabs your wrist. Because this is totally going to happen in a fight. It’s not like your opponent is going to punch you in the face, attack your throat, or kick you. No, he is going to go straight for the wrist.
This doesn’t work. I don’t mean the leg lock. I mean getting to the leg lock. The leg parting move is completely useless. It also assumes that your opponent is just going to stand there and let you do all this. Just for the funnies, we’ve took several stabs at it and no.
So we got the fight out of the way. It took roughly eight hours of research and work for… let me check… 1,101 words. And the edits on Innkeeper landed. We need to do the edit. Do you know why?
It is up for preorder, which means that we have a ton of work to do. It will need at least another 5-10K in corrections and fleshing out, especially in Sean and Dina arc, and we don’t have a hell of a lot of time to do it. We usually underwrite the Innkeeper because the episodic nature of the posts makes it hard to take quiet moment for character development, and this one is no exception.
So full day today. I need coffee. I can’t have any. 🙁
PS. If you are in Austin and watched the protests last night, you may have noticed a small blonde. That would be Kid 2. Someone gave our child a megaphone. Somehow I am not surprised. We were all ready to go Downtown and post bail, but she wasn’t in any danger. Austin cops showed in great numbers to defend the people’s right to peacefully demonstrate. It was mostly high school and university students and several older people. She said the protest went very well, until some people dressed as Communists showed up and started chanting about anarchy. The high school kids went home at that point , because they didn’t agree with the message.
Clearly communists ruin everything.
How is your Friday going?
