I can't wait to read Once Burned. Seems like forever until it will be released. It's funny you brought up heroes in books being military and them not being portrayed right. Lately I've gotten frustrated that authors never write female military as heroines in Urban Fantasy. If anyone could have a good background that would prepare them for kicking vampire butt, that would be it. Of course, it could just be that as a female veteran I want to see it and maybe others don't. I am a little biased. Plus it would take a female veteran to write the role properly. Maybe someday I'll get my wish!

Your talk of military wives brought 'The Gates of Fire' (Steven Pressfield) to mind. Don't know that I'll ever read it again - it was a tough tale - but excellently told and I could NOT put it down. Passed it to my mom, and her verdict is that it's probably the best book she's ever read.
BTW, it's about the Spartans at Thermopylae.

No, you are not a plebeian - that's just a suck-y book. It's the one book I tell people to read an abridged version of.
If you want to read a classic, your time would be better spent on 'Captain Blood', by Rafael Sabatini. Pirates, romance, poetic justice - it has it all.

Agrees with you, Aimee! Nothing brings you out of a story when you have a character behaving in such a OOC way; I mean, if you can kick a man's ass on a regular basis, why would you need to be a doormat?

Last book I finished was the e-ARC of Elfhome, the third in the Tinker series by Wen Spencer. It didn't quite live up to expectations for me because there were a lot of things that were just not believable as written in the context of the world set up in the previous two books. Of course, this book is not proofed, so for all I know, these scenes will be rewritten. The things that bothered me included just how quickly certain people became good at certain things, considering their almost complete and utter lack of training. Just having something memorized (in terms of steps, what to do, the theory, etc.) does not mean you can actually DO it. There are things your body must do in some of those situations that would not be easily done without training. I also did not like the side romance plot lines. There was little to no set up at all for them, and for all I know, they were all complete strangers until they just all of a sudden decided to have intimate relations. I would have liked one of them (well, truthfully I like it, I just wish it was way better developed) if there was a build up instead of an "author says it is so, so it is." I am really hoping that this book is further edited before the official publication. I still really enjoyed it, but those things really got on my nerves.

I also hate it when characters are obviously meant to be fantasy fulfillment characters. Especially when they are way too perfect. It's just annoying, really. I don't know anything about Toby Keith except that he's a country singer. I don't really listen to country, so I just don't care about him. I do think that some of the people who sing for the military are just doing it for the publicity that doing so gets them. I'm sure there are also people who do it and actually mean to be helpful, but still.

Currently reading Archon by Sabrina Benulis and loving the dark twist on angels. Also partly through Inheritence (Paolini). I've been wanting to know the end of this series for so long but I guess my tastes in writing style have changed since Brisignr came out forever ago. I'm having much difficulty stomping through it. I will finish it, just to know what happens, but its going to take a while.

Loved, loved, loved George RR Martin's A Dance with Dragons (and also hated it at the same time but for different reasons. If you've read it, you know what I'm talking about.)

And so chomping at the bit for Kim Harrison's A Perfect Blood in less than two weeks. Trent. Need I say more?

The first book in the series is currently available electronically for 99cents on Kindle or Nook. A nice way to try it and then get the second book when it comes out :)
