Y’all go ahead: shop, get squished, deal with awful traffic… I am sitting at home, all cozy, and drinking my coffee. Mmmm, coffee.
We had an awesome Thanksgiving. We had turkey, mashed potatoes, roast, stuffing, three kinds of pie and a cheesecake. Then we watched the game between Miami and Dallas. Woo, Dallas won with a field goal. It was dramatic! Three seconds on the clock.
Bits of Thanksgiving, in kids words:
Kid 1, examining my gorgeous strawberry and blueberry pies: Wow, Mom, your pies don’t look awful this time.
Me: ….
***
A little later
Kid 2, wandering into the kitchen.
Kid 1: Hey, you’ve got to see these pies. *opening the stove*
Kid 2: Wow. They are not ugly this time.
Kid 1: I know, right?
***
On trendsetting, not so good.
Kid who shall not be named for privacy reasons, expressing some troubling things at the Thanksgiving table.
Me: As soon as we get your math under control, you are going to see a specialist.
Gordon: Exactly.
Kid: O_O. Why?
Me: Because we’re already dealing with the issues with your sister, and we are taking no chances.
Other kid, crossing her arms, all indignant: Well, look at me. I had no idea I was such a trendsetter.
When I quit working on Wednesday, I’ve reached the point in the synopsis that said, ‘And then stuff happens, leading to the big finale.”
I am happy report that we have thought up some stuff that needed to happen. I have no idea how we’re going to get there. Right now the wordcount seems the size of a mountain. And it’s all due very, very soon and no, we absolutely can’t miss the deadline.
I will need more coffee.

I will fetch you more coffee dread mistress, all the time with my eyes discretely averted.
She will require a foot rub at three PM in order to stimulate her creative juices!

Phhhh to you too!
By the way, that was an awesome hat!
I know, right? I am going to wear it all day!

I am glad you had a good Thanksgiving! I had to work, and figured out that during the 24 hours of Thanksgiving, I ate a handful of pretzels and a single yummy cake ball that one of the aides brought. I got my break after midnight & had a vending machine sandwich. BUT my reward to myself will be reading Fate’s Edge uninterrupted next week, can’t wait!!
We had a very nice dinner, but I was exhausted after all the prep. I am in awe that you cooked/baked all that. Wow!
As for the pies, I’m betting they were eaten with gusto and no consideration given for appearance.
Yes, all that turkey and deluscious carb packed goodness has set me up for a great evening of razor clamming out at the beach. Black Friday, I wave my private parts in your general direction! Too bad eldest child works for a major retailer and is expected to work 15 hours today.
It’s kind of like when my kids say “Hey, your gravy is almost thick enough this time.” I usually come back with “Fine, everyone can cook their own dang dinner next time.” Now that I think about it, we all do those backwards complements. We’re an odd family.
No stores for me either. Tomorrow we have a birthday party, another holiday dinner and my mother in law changed the menu so now I can’t make cheesy potatoes which means I have to stop at the store. Damn.
Write like the wind:)

So far, my son has eaten almost half of the one pie I made. The dessert was a warm lemon cake with raspberry sauce. and it was awesome. But the son won’t touch anything but the pie.
I told bratlet that she was going to be helping me with TD dinner. She did help. She helped baste the turkey when I went running and she did the crescent rolls-pillsbury style. But mostly, she washed dishes. And scowled. And glared. “Mom, I thought I was going to help you COOK.”
I said she’d HELP. I never specified how.

You literally just made me drool with that pie description. Bad! Bad Shiloh! xD

LOL… it was so easy. I found it here. The raspberry sauce is just frozen raspberries and sugar. I’m all about the easy.

You go, Mom! My girls (ages 12 & 14) were pretty much useless. But I’m going to make them mop the floors and clean the litter box in retaliation. Moral: There is no free turkey dinner.
My second job is at Target and people were lining up outside when I left on Thursday morning at 1am. I also get to work tonight which is like a death sentence because the “guests” have been shopping all day and are cranky or were too lazy to get there early and then wonder why there are no products on the shelves. If there were any way at all for me to avoid Black Death Friday I would. I’d much rather have coffee and have my pies called ugly than be trampled to death and pepper-sprayed. At least I don’t work at Wal-mart…
My sister works at Wal Mart. You wouldn’t believe the stories she tells about Black Friday. Every year for Christmas her present is two nights at a hotel anywhere she can drive to. I figure she needs the break after all the holiday “joy”.
For what it’s worth, i totally did not shop today.

Today I am using the Turkey carcass to make a wonderful giant pot of soup that I will freeze into single servings to last me most of the winter. The soup always tastes better than the actual dinner to me.
Oh dude same! I have the bones and all the veggies I stuff the turkey body with (we don’t do stuffing inside, I use root veggies and herbs) in a giant pot cooking down for a killer broth. I’ll use it for the rest of the winter to cook EVERYTHING. Rice, chicken, whatever needs awesome flavor.
As it was the turkey was brined and basted in my homemade veggie broth.
I am still in jammy pants avoiding the shopping.
Hope you got your coffee.

And right now, I am glad I live in Sweden. Oh, we have our sales here too, that starts on Boxing Day but I avoid it if I can. But in February is a sale I don’t avoid. Then the annual book sale starts
.

We in The Netherlands also do not have Black Friday.
The sales we have are more or less easy going for shopping. Except the three days off the shop-concern ‘Bijenkorf’. But that is out of shopping region
Heh. My hubby went to WAlmart at 10 PM. Two men got in a fist fight over blenders. $4 blenders. One had several and wouldn’t give the other man one. So… BAM!
Both sent to jail and I cring at the amount of bail they had to pay.
Irony: At midnight they put out more blenders. There was plenty to go around. But both men are sitting in jail.
I love men.
No shopping for me! I am sitting at home, enjoying my turkey leftovers and finishing “Hellforged”. Glad to hear you enjoyed your celebrations and that your pies were good looking and tasty!
No shopping for me. Not worth the hassle. Went to the movies to see The Descendants. George Clooney is a lovely way to spend a few hours!
At least no one at your Thanksgiving broke into a long discussion of sex toys, or have one woman announce in full hearing of her husband of less than one year that he can’t satisfy her and she much prefers her dildo and oh, yeah, she washes it in the dishwasher. And no, I’m not exaggerating, and no, she hadn’t been drinking.

I think you win.

Oh it was horrifying and yet funny as hell.

Seriously? The dishwasher? My family is so boring!
Can you imagine looking in the dishwasher and finding a dildo?
Diana Pharaoh Francis recently posted..Shadow City Snippet
No words to this whole thread.
Apparently at an outing the next day she went on and on about how much he *did* actually satisfy her. Perhaps he mentioned he didn’t care for the loud announcement at Thanksgiving.
Diana Pharaoh Francis recently posted..Shadow City Snippet
Can’t resist…I DID have that experience once. Luckily I was the only person there other than my friend who owned the dishwasher and the dildos. It was pretty dang funny.

There are only two conditions in which you’ll find me at a Black Friday sale: against my will and heavily armed.
Lol!

When will some store decide to have a Wednesday special sale on pepper spray for those who want to engage in “Competitive Shopping”?
And having the sibling checked out by the specialist sounds right. Sorry to hear it seems necessary.
Glad your turkey dinner went well. Ours was good too, though I bought our pies because I can’t make pie crust to save my life. My friend’s daughter works at a Walmart in Georgia and said the incoming customers were paying $20 and up Thursday night to get shopping carts from the outgoing customers and even helping them load their cars so they could get empty cart.
Pms laughing at the ‘ugly pies’ comment!

I diverged from the norm for dessert and went with my Lemoncello Cheesecake drizzled with chocolate gnache and topped with fresh raspberries. Trumped the sister’s pumpkin tart hands dowm…(competitive desserts at 10 paces- SMACKDOWN! I won 3rd year running this year..)
I love Lemoncello! Next time you have a sour throat, put some in a cup of good black tea.
I dont cook, bake, fuss or muss
but I will eat *most* of what is put in front of me. I didnt bother with the Black Friday drama this year either. I shop year round so nah. BTW that pie looks yummy!
Turkey Day was great. We cooked the turkey and pork dressing and took them to Mom’s, along with Brussels spouts and a large cheese cake. Mom made Giblet Grave from turkey pan drippings. Dessert consisted of the afore mentioned cheese cake, strawberry trifle, marshmallow salad, pumpkin roll cake, cherry pie, Dutch apple pie, and two pecan pies. Niece said that next year she’s skipping the turkey dinner and going straight for the pie!
My Black Friday consisted of a trip to B&N to pickup two $139 Simple Nook for $79 each for grandkids. Saved $60 bucks each. They’re getting gift cards so they can get copies of your books. Left house at 8:50a.m. and was back at house by 9:45. Trip included a 10 minute delay at the checkout counter and a stop at the local McDonald’s.
Time to sit back and enjoy the weekend!
I never got in the habit of shopping on Black Friday. Mom worked in retal (anyone old enough to remenber Woolworths?) and after collage I worked in the restaurant insdutry.
WOOLWORTH’s! First jobs for my sister and I were working at Woolworth’s at the soda counter at Christmas when we were 15 (back in the good ol days when you could get “working papers” at that age in the early ’80s). I got bored there though and left to work at a lumbar yard driving a forklift…..
I only shopped Black Friday once, when I was re doing my kitchen and went for 1/2 price stainless appliances..great buys! and the kitchen turned out great!
I’m a great dessert/pie-lover so my compliments for the lovely pie-picture!
Can I have the recipe? Then I can try to bake it with christmas.
I’ll break the trend and say I did go Black Friday shopping and very much enjoyed myself. I don’t get up at crazy hours; I take my time and don’t get frazzled and am extra special polite to everyone else. That makes it enjoyable to me. I’ve never had a bad experience doing my Black Friday shopping.
Thanksgiving day was lovely: Turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato souffle, and cranberry sauce, with pumpkin-ginger bread pudding. Yum.
I see you have picked up the Texan “ya’ll”!
