No Monday Snippet

Sorry guys.  Words have been sparse lately.  I am hoping to work on Julie’s story today and finish it up today or tomorrow.  Tomorrow might be dicey as we have appointments all day.

I bought a slow cooker.  I think it’s awesome.  Found a Chicken Tortilla soup recipe that’s a total hit.  Now trying a stew.  The Chicken Tortilla Soup is surprisingly easy, it’s literally a can, a can, a can, and some chicken.  South-Western cuisine is mostly new to me, so I was happy it didn’t suck.

In an effort to make some comfort food, I searched Amazon for Adjika and found it.  So I ordered Adjika, Kmeli-Suneli, and Tkemali and made harcho, which is a spicy soup.  Kid 1 liked that one too, although not as much as she liked the tortilla one.

Baby Trinity

Kid 2 in an effort of not being upstaged by arrival of Baby Trinity upped the cuteness factor.

When I pointed out that Ms. Sophie, who was bribed with chicken for her modeling, may not necessarily dig being dressed as a pumpkin, Kid 2 got a slightly evil look in her eyes and said, “I am doing it for her, not for me.  She loves it.  If my baby told me she wanted to stop , I would stop and not do any more pageants, but she just enjoys them so much.  Go glitz or go home.”

I knew my watching Toddlers in Tiaras would come back to haunt me.

And that’s my update.  I will try to post a snippet later in the week, assuming I can actually make words happen.

Almost forgot – Keely emailed and we gave her permission to put Bouda Babes shirts on Zazzle.  So shirts are coming your way and I will post a link when they are live.

  1. O-O. Ms. Sophie is not smiling. I think more chicken is required. I want to see what Angus’ costume looks like. :D

    • Ms. Sophie gets deer-in-the-headlights look when there is a camera. :D Her suffering lasted only 15 minutes and then she was given chunks of baked chicken for her services. We’re so happy – we finally found dog food she enjoys and she is gaining a little weight.

    • He does not have one as yet, I almost bought him a jersey so I could do that line from Heathers about loving my gay football player son.

  2. Hey, Ms. Sophie looks perfect. Heck, even my ‘working dogs’ get dressed up: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1752714813463.2099929.1106691725&type=1&l=c6086d9cb8

And, I’m in Dog Fancy concerning puppies and fear periods. *Smile*

  3. Awww Sophie looks adorable! My friend managed to dress up her cat for a few minutes as well http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lt67k0eZZR1qzjc9co1_500.jpg

  4. Very cute pics. :)

Crockpots are great – I need to find more recipes, though.

Great news on the t-shirt! :)

  5. I heart slow cookers….I am making a breakfast casserole for my co-workers for tomorrow….We are working 12am – 9pm….and a hearty breakfast is called for….

  6. I’d love to see the recipe for that Harcho soup, tho I understand words are more important!

  7. magic girl says:

they are both so very cute!

  8. looked around online at those ingredients and saw a couple recipes for harcho. That sounds delicious. I’m definitely going to have to try that sometime.

  9. I love slow cookers too! I just fixed my first ever beef stew in one yesterday, and it was amazing!

  10. Google crock pot girls… the recipes are numerous and TASTY. They also do videos in case you feel moronic in the kitchen… like I do. They just slapped a cornbread recipe up on facebook and I will probably try it later this week.

On a side note I put my ACTUAL baby (1 year) into a homemade apple costume. She had the same expression as Ms. Sophie and no she wouldn’t take chicken as bribes… not even cookies worked. Alas, no pictures.

  11. Aw! My cats would plan my untimely death if I dressed them up. ^.^ Can’t wait for the shirts!!!! :D (Please be sure they make plus sizes!)

    • I agree with the request for larger size t-shirts, all the cute t-shirts end in XL. If they give us larger sizes I can get a shirt too and if I lose this weight (positive thinking here..lol) I can use it as a night shirt to put on and curl up with a good book or it could become a part of another t-shirt quilt.

  12. Sophie looks cute! Happy Halloween!

  13. Love Sophie’s costume. Could you please post the tortilla soup receipe too?

  14. Sophie’s expression reminds me of Ralphie in the pink rabbit costume. :D

  15. Happy Halloween! Are Kid 1 and Kid 2 dressing up, or are they too old for that? I forget what age dressing up and trick or treating stops being cool.

    • For me I think once you are a teen, it is probably time to stop going door to door. You can go to a party or dress up and hand out candy but it seems unfair to the little kids otherwise. I am going to dress up though, maybe with Angus.

      • Dustin and I sometimes dress up for work, but this year it seems like Halloween snuck up on us. We went as the Drs. Horrible a couple years ago, maybe I’ll bust out the coat and goggles for the kiddos tonight. What are you dressing up as?

        • I am a horrible zombie soldier of some sort, Ilona and Kid 2 did my makeup. Kid 2 just came down dressed as a dead prom queen.

          • If I were to dress up, it would have been in a “Men in Black” getup, with business cards to hand out that read “I’m from the Government and I’m here to help”, perhaps followed by “Burn this. It’s above your security clearance.”

  16. nuitblanche' says:

I wish I had the good comebacks Kid 2 has when I was that age. I can just see the scene; my mother would go into either “the silent I’m not talking to you anymore” or the “why are you talking back to me like that!” mode, while my dad is in the corner snickering away!
Trinity is so cute as well as Sophie in her “Great Pumkin” costume.

  17. Pugs make perfect pumpkins. :-)

Has Trinity done her impression of a dust mop yet? It’s one of my favorite traits of puppies of that breed. Well, that and the sheer adorableness and engaging personalities…

If you guys are into oatmeal, you can set the crockpot up before you go to bed on a timer and have yumminess when you awaken. I like doing steel-cut oats this way, and this time of the year it is with pumpkin puree + spices or with apples and cider.

  18. Our fav tortilla soup is from Max and Erma’s and is basically the same thing…a can, a can, a can..chicken. It can be found at http://www.food.com and search for Max and Ermas tortilla soup. Best one ever!

  19. Bwa ha ha, “Go glitz or go home.” I cant’t wait for the “Bouda Babes” shirts.

  20. I love dressing up my cats for Halloween, my eldest is my cell phone wallpaper in his cowboy hat and bandanna, the chatterbox has a jester hat and ruffle collar, and the youngest, who frequently gets referred to as “the demon spawn,” has a devil costume complete with pitchfork and tail.

Awww, love Ms Sophie! I was showing our bassett his halloween choices for this year and left them on top of his crate and came back a bit later to lots of fluff. Guess he didn’t want to wear the dinosaur hat this year! He does tend to look terribly embarrassed in it. So King Jeremiah it is, gold crown, purple cape, he’s fabulous!
Love baby Trinity too, so cute!

Such cute puppies and such a witty kid. I wish I was that quick with lines like that….
    Happy Halloween!

  23. Happy a Happy Halloween, and good luck with work! It always gets better….

Ilona, you want an easy slow cooker recipe?

Chicken pieces (doesn’t matter, dark, white, bone-in or boneless) and a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce. 6 to 8 hrs. on low. That’s it! Yum!

p.s. Cute dogs. I have an old, crotchety cat who I managed to get to wear mouse ears one year long enough to get a picture.

  25. The puppy is total cuteness. I was going to ask you for the tortilla soup recipe just from reading the summary. then I click and there ya go. you already have it.

  26. Dogs (and kids) are awesome. I have an excellent crock pot receipe for lamb shanks. Place lamb shanks in crock pot. For EACH lamb shank add:
    1/4 cup red wine,
1/4 cup beef broth (or chicken),
    1T worsches. sauce,
    1 clove garlic (minced),
    1 2-inch sprig rosemary.
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours on LOW. I serve it with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted parsnips and carrots.

    • love, love, love lamb shanks in the crockpot. I do that too, also pot roast – brown hunk of beef on both sides first, slap in crock pot, dump a can of stewed tomatos on top, onion soup mix, red wine, garlic. Walk away and come back much later to deliciousness.

It’s also great for making apple butter. Load it up with cored apples, crack the lid a little, stir occasionally and let it go for a really long time.

  27. Happy Halloween – love the pooch snaps :)

I just bought a slow cooker for my dad (my mum has just had a stroke so Pops will be in charge in the kitchen – now there’s a scary thought for Halloween!) and he loves it!

You’re in Texas now, so it’s Tex-Mex food, not Southwestern. :) (I think of Southwestern food as having more chilis.) I miss Tex-Mex restaurants so much!! *cries* Chuy’s is my favorite. If you go there, make sure you ask for the jalapeno ranch dip for the tortilla chips. YUM! I lived in Texas around half of my life, so I grew up on that food. Tex-Mex is my favorite Mexican derivative.

    Enjoy the new puppy!

Here is a great Taco Soup for the Crockpot:

    1 lb hamburger
    1 med onion
5-6 cans beans (your choice, though I like black, red, and navy
    1 can hominy
    1 packet ranch dressing
    1 8oz can V-8

chop onion and brown with hamburger, put in crockpot, dump in everything else, don’t drain the cans. Cook for several hours and enjoy!

This is a very versatile recipe. Don’t like hominy? Don’t add it. Only put in 4 cans? go for it.

    Hope you like.

  30. I know you didn’t ask for another, but I had to contribute my favorite slow-cooker soup. It isn’t that different from yours, but does include a can of beer. The only thing I do different is cut up the chicken into chunks I love the flavor the beer adds. It’s very easy.

  31. I love the puppies! Are they going trick-or-treating tonight with the girls? :)

  33. Happy Halloween! This is my favorite day of the year. I hope it helps get your creative juices flowing.I can’t wait for the Bouda shirts, looks great.

  34. i new gordon would understand. This is the year of the zombie. Move over bloodsuckers there is new monster in town. ok not so new; however, zombies have been my greatest fear since i was seven and i watched Night of the Living Dead. the Walking Dead show on AMC is something you gotta watch. I’m telling you for George you need to brush up on your types of dead. We all want to be scared it let’s us know we are alive. Happy Halloween. P.s. Paranormal Activity Three is totally awesome you gotta see it.

  35. Happy Halloween! Sadly, almost no kids were trick or treating in my neighborhood… We even took the bucket of candy out when we walked the dog to hand out, and there wasn’t anyone to give it to!

I wish our dog would wear a costume.. The most we ever get is him wearing a Christmas-y bowtie for Christmas. (He always pulls the antlers off)

Also, you should definitely try short ribs in the slow cooker, they’re super awesome. :D

  36. Half of my families meals are cooked in the crock pot. I love that thing & am always scooping up crock pot cook books. It makes things so much easier because I despise cooking. The crock pot is my kitchen go to. My guys love my 24hour beef stew, 12 hour pot roast, & my chili.

Sophie is too cute, so is Trinity. It was rainy & cold here, so Halloween was a bust for us.

  37. If your crock pot is large enough -
crumple tin foil in loose balls and place them on the bottom of the pot
place seasoned whole chicken (Hy’s or Lawry’s seasoning salt works well ) in a roasting bag
seal bag, place on top of foil then leave in pot for the day
tastes like rotisserie chicken from grocery stores only better

  38. Thanks for the recipe Ilona. I’m going to try it. I’ve had a slow cooker for 10 years and used it for the first time a month ago, heh.
That magic chicken in a bag sounds pretty cool, Deborah. I’ll try that one too.

  39. How do I pre-order the Julie book?

  40. Ilona, I was wondering if you could post how you did your tortilla soup? (No rush, I know you’re super busy) Over the summer I had been experimenting with tortilla soups and I’ve come down to using a basic soup stock (I found it on some diet soup website), corn, chicken, and adding taco seasoning to it. Thanks!

  41. We love our slow cooker. Sophie looks cute, but she doesn’t look too impressed being a pumpkin ;P
