Oh Noes, Not The Pomeranian Bite!

Prompted by questions about the cute Pomeranian picture on the previous post.  I went to Wikipedia to find additional cute pictures of Pomeranians.  For those who don’t know, they are cute fluffy dogs of the Spitz type and they are very tiny.

Imagine my surprise when I found the following quote under behavior in this Wikipedia article:

[quote cite="Wkipedia"]

Behavior

Pomeranians are typically a very friendly and lively breed of dog. They love to be around their owners and are known to be protective of them.[9] They bond quickly with their owners, and can suffer from separation anxiety if not trained to spend time alone.[10] Pomeranians are alert and aware of changes in their environment and barking at new stimuli can develop into a habit of barking excessively in any situation. They are somewhat defensive of their territory and will thus bark when they encounter any outside noises. Given this defensive nature, it should be noted that in just about all cases the bite of a pomeranian is nearly always fatal[10] Pomeranians are intelligent dogs, respond well to training, and can be very successful in getting what they want from their owners.[9]

Total win!

    This made my day!

I’ll never look at Pomeranians in the same way again – perhaps I should have just said I’ll never look at Pomeranians again ’cause I don’t want to be bitten to death, lol.

They are the cutest things you’ll ever see, and yes they train their people very well. Mine always gets exactly what he wants at all times. By the way, the only thing he’s afraid of is our mentally unbalanced cat who out weighs him by a good 5 pounds.

Did I tell you how great the book was? Loved it!

A pomeranian and a husky??! What a difficult match… I hope the daddy was an ambitious little thing a the mommy a big lady with strange tastes and not the other way around! My boyfriend has a very small pincher with a big ego with a fixation for the neighbour’s female dog. She’s half husky too a quite big and she semms to have problem understanding that the little rat is really a male adult dog too…

My dog is part pomeranian, terrier and poodle. Basically the trifecta of cute and harmless. So as for those fatal pomeranian bites. Come on. I bet every single person did the double take and the giggle/laugh after reading that.

But I can certainly attest to the barking at new stimuli. The things that he will bark at are truly stunning. TV, people, the wind.

LOL. Since I own six of them, I better be extra careful! Not all poms are tiny toys, though. I collect the mutant kind, all over 12 lbs. Demon Dog, whom you see on Facebook a lot, is 17lbs and still growing. I once had another, Magic, who grew to 28 lbs. Mutants, my kind of killer pomeranieans!

Our neighbor had Poms and would just let them out the front door with no fence etc. If I opened the door to our house they would run in and I would have to chase them out. Also I was always afraid that I would run them over with the car because I wouldn’t see them due to being small.

Does this mean that, somehow, Pomeraniens are related to the Attack Bunny (Rabbit) in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? (“What’s he do, nibble your bum?”). Ilona, it is worth taking five minute to watch the scene again:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99X8WDQWAKg
What did we do before youtube?

If that doesn’t work, maybe try stamping (not quite jumping) up and down, leg to leg (tantrum-style), yelling whatever comes to mind. Maybe that will clear the cobwebs. Be sure that there is nothing to step on or hit your toes against before you start the jumping. maybe take the ear phones off, too.

In the alternative, have you considered a nap, or going out for some kind of treat? You deserve a break. Just remember, we LOVE your stories, whether they are 7 or 10 (or nowhere) on the lists!

Ooo — good point! Don’t under estimate the cute little fluffy dog with two (or more) pointy teeth!

In my experience, poms bark excessively and for no reason so you’d have plenty of warning before the fatal nibble!

I had a Pomeranian for a couple of days a few years back when my husband and I got a call from the local rescue center. At the time our Shi tzu male and shi tzu-maltese mix babies are almost a yr old and we’ve gotten used to their lively but quiet nature. (they are hyper-active but they seldom barks). So we agreed to take care of this 4yrs old Pom whose owner is going thru a divorce. I never gotten used to the non-stop barking and I admit to being a little glad when the previous owner took him back. I asked some friends after this because I really find them cute and although relieved I still got a little sad when we lost the little barker. I found out Poms are not only loud barkers but the angry bites I got from the ‘almost adopted’ pom are only playful nips and it happens often in a house w/ pomeranian. *shrivels*
They’re cute enough to look at and let play with my babies at the park but no thank you to adopting another:-p I often complain how spoiled our dogs are but when I remember poms I know I’m the spoiled one:D

Yui, No, poms are not biters. Honestly. I have had 24 poms in my lifetime and none of them ever bit. They’re lively animals and none of them yelp more than normal small dogs who are excited when their owners come home. My poms always settle down after I’ve greeted them (all are now lying on my feet, half-asleep). Teacup breeds of any kind have more excitable natures, of course, due to their breeding.

After my Gran died we took her Pom back home with us. After he settled in he was the top dog in the neighbourhood. On one occasion a renegade St. Bernard came strolling into the area. I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw the big dog run for home with a tiny puff ball yapping after it.

The bite is news to me but considering the way my dog used to strut around, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a secret like that.

I could see them meaning that the bite is fatal to the dog – like it bites something, and something bigger decides to eat it D:.

Also, pomeranians are super cute, but considering the bark and separation anxiety factors, I definitely do not want one now.

    We had a Pomeranian once.

It pissed on the new carpet. Deliberately. Repeatedly. Tore up everything it could get its paws on.

Turns out they’re jealous of other pets and children and don’t do well if they’re not the center of attention.

We had to give it away after only two weeks because it cost us $4,000 in property damage. Four thousand dollars. I shit you not.

And we got it as a puppy so it wasn’t a training issue. It was a diva issue.
