The rain is pouring. The bushes and the tree outside the office window are drenched, the raindrops taking half a second for a brief detour to water-slide across the leaves before they plummet down to the lawn. The pool has approached dangerous levels. The air is refreshingly cold. Gordon’s aunt used to call it nippy.
The outside is rain-soaked, cold, and grey. The inside of the office is warm, with yellow electric light and the cheesecake-colored walls are persistently cheerful. The cat attempted a brief expedition outside, but gave up when she saw water in her food dish and cried until she was let back in.
I have a ginger-pumpkin candle and a cup of hot delicious coffee. Life is good.

Today I need to work a little bit. I had taken time off to paint and then to recover, but Andrea’s book is waiting and I can’t avoid it forever. Putting your work out there is a double-edged sword; sometimes I forget it and let it interfere with the rest of my life.
I’ve been playing Risen. It’s an odd RPG. You are a castaway and you wash up on an island. It used to be a quiet place, with a town run by the local crime lord/noble called Don Esteban, outlining farms, and a monastery up by the volcano. But now the ruins have risen from the ground, spewing monsters. The Inquisition arrived to investigate the ruins and promptly locked everyone in town “for their own good.” Esteban got pissed off and took off for the swamp with a gang of his boys.
There are no paladin choices in this game. You very rarely get to be a good guy. Mostly you choose between the lesser of two evils.
Also last night I found out that iBooks has a free (!) edition of Hauff’s Oriental Fairytales and Severed Hand. Read the Severed Hand and Caliph-Stork last night. I was midway through the Ghost Ship when I fell asleep. They had just hung verses from Koran all over the rigging. I wish there was an edition of collected works, but it’s in German.

We need the rain, but I wish it would’ve come without the lightning. They cancelled the See Jane Run 5k that I was supposed to run this morning. I know it’s a risk for every race, and they can’t control the weather, but I’m sad my first 5k was cancelled.
Sorry to hear that.
I don’t really see any lightning or hear any thunder over here, so I am not sure why they would cancel it.
It was pretty serious about 5:30 this morning. The half marathon started at 7, so they cancelled it before then. 5k was supposed to start at 8:30, and probably would’ve been fine, but I heard there were other problems too.
Bummer, Jessie! But congrats on getting the training done. You will really enjoy it when you get to participate in race day!
At least the cat doesn’t look like she got wet
All that fluffy fur would look truly pitiful if she was out for very long.
We had rain all day long yesterday. My grass is very happy now–it used to be kinda crunchy. *L*
We too have rain. I am so happy. Yesterday it was rain and lightning. Today only rain. No complaints here. We’re all smiling!
Raining here, too. It is fantastic. I’ve spent the last 3 days monster-cleaning (steaming carpets, dusting ceiling fans, the works!) so all the laundry is done, every toilet scrubbed, every bed made. Windows are open, the house smells like clean sheets and rain so I’m taking the day off and reading Angels of Darkness
.
And I might cook something. Fajitas for dinner and Coffee Creme Brulee for dessert.
I love the rain, and a good thunderstorm. I always want to be the idiot who is out in the middle of the field watching things go crash! Hope andreas book doesn’t cause you too much grief. Everything you have posted so far is fantastic.
I love rainy Sundays. I like to tuck into the kitchen to cook and bake and listen to audiobooks all day long.
Here the weather is great! Sun, warm (most probably one of the last warm days)… and I have to write a fricking paper! And because I have been procrastinating so much I have no choice but write it! HUMPH.
in that very same situation
It’s raining here too, but this is England so it’s no biggie

pah, you’d be lucky to see the sun over here (i live in england) – the last one and a half weeks being an exception
It is raining here as well. But this is normal when it is autumn in The Netherlands.
I’m so jealous of your rain! It’s been highs in the upper 80′s where I live and I am ready for fall weather! Also, my gran uses nippy as the word to describe chilly weather so it made me smile to see you mention that. I’m glad you’re having a good cozy day with your coffee and yummy-smelling candle!
Apparently it’s raining all over the world. I’m sitting in Calcutta, India and the sky’s been cloudy all day, with a cool wind blowing into my room through the veranda. I’ll rain tonight.
yay!
It’s pouring raining here in south Florida as well. Hum. Anyone got any boat building skills?
I drove from Austin to Bryan today, and it rained the entire way (for those not from Texas, about 2 hours). I was so excited! A lot of the watering areas have looked really really low, so hopefully this helps some.
No rain here just beautiful fall weather. Lol.
How nice to see rain in a place that has been so dry for so long. When it rains here I always want to go into the kitchen and bake.
How interesting here in rainy Washington it isn’t raining. The world must be confused
In Australia where I am there’s no rain everything is heading into summer so the weather is just perfect and all the wattle is coming out and most plants are sending out spores causing hayfever everywhere.
Ah, but here in delightful Washington State, it’s just the pause between fall storms that usually result in electrical outages and cars floating by and trees through the roof. Brace yer selves, mateys! She’s about to blow!
Well, maybe Bastrop will stop burning for a week or so, if there is anything left in the county to burn.
Rain makes a nice change!!!!
I love this time of year. The scents of autumn and the rain. My joints however hate it. I’ve been in some serious pain the last few weeks. Ugh.
I recently discovered Air Wick has a scent called Apple Cinnamon Medley. It’s pure autumn heaven! Reminds me of my Grandma boiling a pot of Apple Cider with cinnamon sticks. Yum.
Your ginger-pumpkin candle sounds yummy too. I wonder if Air Wick has something similar.
hmmmm…bit of drizzle here now and then. im just glad that the the water has gone down in most of the flooded areas here in the Philippines…some folks are just now clearing up the debris and mud; but i think all are still thankful it wasnt another typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) -_-
I’m happy for all those that needed/wanted rain and are getting it. But I’m happiest for those of us in Buffalo, NY runing around in shorts and tees, under a perfectly sunny, blue sky the middle of October. Yahoo!!!
I was very happy for all my friends and family in Texas when I heard they got finally got rain but could it not have waited until after the Tigers beat the Rangers??
It has been irritatingly warm and sunny here. Minnesota is not supposed to be hitting almost 90 degrees in October!!! I have this dreadful feeling that we are going to skip fall entirely this year and go straight to winter. A winter which every newspaper/anchorman is saying will be even worse than last year. *sigh*
it’s raining here in denmark to……. and it is probably going to rain until spring (with a bit of snow thrown in if we are lucky) this is a really wet time for us danes
I wish we had rain….Instead, we have snow! Snow in early October in Arizona! It makes me sad….
I’m sitting pretty in New England with the temps going from 57 degrees this morning to 83 degrees this afternoon – for the third day in a row. I was going to go apple and pumpkin picking (my favorite fall activity) this weekend, but it just doesn’t seem right when it’s this hot. It’s supposed to be cold for that – put-on-the-fleece cold. So I guess I’m hanging out in my air conditioned house (thank goodness we didn’t pull them from the windows yet) and waiting until next weekend. (Or maybe I’ll soak up the last of the summer sun.)

I feel your pain, Karen…
Nice smells and a cuppa something comforting can go a long way in making people feel better! Glad you were able to get over that hump. Me, too
If you really want to know what a lot of rain feels like, you should have spend the summer in Northern Germany. Except there was no summer. Only rain and rain and rain and rain. Did I mention rain? I don’t have any problem with the rain now as it is autumn and I enjoy the days in front of the fireplace with hot tea and a nice knitting project. But that feels really wrong during august.
Sooo glad you got rain–a slow rain that might actually sink into the ground and not just all run off (what we used to call a “gully-washer”).
We finally got rid of the rain here in DC for a couple of beautiful sunny days this past weekend. We had had the rain for most of the last month and a half. And it’s supposed to start raining again tonight for the next week. Are we sure it isn’t really Spring? Maybe we’ve been pulled into a splinter dimension.
