The Small Library Giveaway

the-small-library-giveaway

Right now the libraries across the country are facing budget cuts.  We have a full bookcase of author copies, audio books, and foreign language additions.  They don’t really do anything except collect dust. If you are a library employee in United States and you are interested in our titles, please look at the pictures below. Please be aware that the pictures are large and do take a while to load.

If you see something you would like, please comment on this post listing what books you are interested in and listing your librarian credentials.  Once verified, we will ship the books to you at our expense.

This giveaway is open to libraries only. We reserve the right to exclude certain libraries.  (There is one librarian in particular who sends us a form email letter every six months requesting books.  We’d sent a large box once.  We were unable to verify that the donation was received.  We will not be donating to them again.)

Neither of us anticipated a large response to this post, so the giveaway will be open for one week or until the books are gone, whichever comes first.  In the unlikely event that at the end of the week we have too many requests, the winners will be chosen by random number generator.

Comments on this post are temporarily closed until we take stock of what is going where and see what we have left.

I am a flexible assistant librarian for the Orem Public Library in Orem, Utah.
My library’s audio collection is very, very popular and I would love to have the following books on audio.
Magic Bites; Magic Burns; Magic Strikes; On The Edge; Bayou Moon.
Also, a paper copy of Must Love Hellhounds.

I am pretty sure I have convinced my library to purchase multiple paper copies of everything else. :)

Feel free to contact me and I can provide my official city e-mail address or get you the name and phone number of the library’s department secretary to verify that I do indeed, work there.

Thanks, guys. As always, you are incredibly generous.

In a time when budgets are getting slashed left and right this is such a great thing!
I am a Librarian at North Shelby Library. It’s located on the outskirts of Birmingham, AL. I received my Masters in Library Science from the University of Alabama. I have been trying to get the person in charge of ordering fiction to add your books to her list for ages and would love to get some copies on our shelves so I have put them in patrons’ hands! Feel free to email me if there is any other way I need to confirm being an actual librarian.
We would love one copy of each of your English language books. Magic Bites, Magic Burns, Magic Strikes, Magic Bleeds, On the Edge, Bayou Moon, Must Love Hellhounds.

What a wonderful gesture – and so generous! I’m a librarian (Head of Access Services & Assistant Professor) at the university of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I was wondering if I could request the audiocollection of Magic Bites, Magic Burns, Magic Strikes, Magic Bleeds, On the Edge, Bayou Moon. Our audio collection of fiction is sparse, and the students take advantage of it quite often. I know they’d appreciate having some good paranormal fiction to take with them on their breaks!

In Britain right now many libraries are facing closure. My local library has a really pathetic romance section. There are only a handful of paranormal romances and even fewer in the urban fantasy genre.

I’m not a librarian but I use my public library all the time, especially for audio books. I would be happy to to take anything you can send (or have left over after you have filled requests from other library’s) and donate it to the Frederick County Public Library (we are in Maryland).

You are incredibly generous! And I am going to ask for just a little more. I recently started working at the Yongsan Library which is the Army library in Seoul. (I know that you said in the States but I’m hoping that our APO box will be close enough.) I would love copies of your books in English and/or Spanish and the audios too if possible. I don’t want to sound greedy but it would awesome to get everything.

Time to brag, the Yongsan Base library has the highest circulation of any army library in the world. Part of that is no doubt our excellent staff and collection, and part of that is that there are very limited sources of English material in Korean bookstores.

Please email me for the address if you are willing to send it to our APO.

    THANK YOU!!

I had similar atruistic feelings last summer and tried to dontate a copy of one of your novels my husband had purchased for me (not knowing I had bought one for myself the same day) to our county library system. It went something like this…
Me: this is brand new copy I know the waitlist is 80 or so people deep and I would like to dontate it for those poor suckers.
Librarian: all donatons go straight to the used books sale
Me: but this is a brand new title, it was just released yesterday and has never been read.
Librarian: our policy is that all donated books go straight to the book sale.
Me: I used to work for the library and that was not a policy.
Librarian: it is a new policy.
    Me: ah. I’ll keep it.

Apparently the people in charge decided it was too tasking for library staff to review donations given that budget cuts made for fewer staff members. Guess they get all those library materials for free?

    1. Erika
      Erika May 13, 2011 at 4:13 pm .

That is the policy at my local public library, too. It seemed weird but they explained that a lot of libraries are outsourcing their cataloging now and purchasing already cataloged items so it is more expensive for them to send in donations than for them to just purchase the books. And, sometimes they just don’t want a lot of extra copies of the same book even if it is really popular.

    2. Hillary
      Hillary May 13, 2011 at 7:15 pm .

I’m a librarian and I know that one of the reasons that donated books go straight to the book sale is that it actually costs the library more in terms of cataloging than buying it straight from the publisher. With the times being what they are now, that may change again. I would recommend to Ilona and Gordon that they double check this sort of policy at the libraries they decide to try to donate to, to be sure that they are entering the circulating collection. The good news about the book sale stuff is that it is run by Friends of the Library and all of the proceeds to go towards operating costs.

    3. Morgan Higgins
      Morgan Higgins May 13, 2011 at 9:37 pm .

My library does go through all of our donations and add what we think will circulate. We’ll use anything people want to give us. But we do all our own cataloging within our library system, so that might make the difference.

      Junegirl63 May 14, 2011 at 9:42 am .

I had the same thing happen. I ordered a bunch of duplicate books and checked my local library’s online catalog and noticed that they either didn’t have some of the books I had purchased or had a huge waiting list with only 1 or 2 copies purchased. I took them into the library and they told me the same thing – that it would end up at the used book sale and go for like $1-2 (these were $7.99-$14.99 books too). I didn’t donate the books to them because of that. I did end up donating them to a local school’s library that was willing to accept them.

I just checked and our local library in Australia has all your books too – I have my own copies, of course, and so did not need to borrow them from the library. If you have extra audio copies of your books, and would consider sending to Australia, I could get our librarian to contact you. Could you please clarify if you would send to an Australian library (or any overseas libraries)?

This is a wonderful offer. I am a library specialist at the Arizona State University’s library at the Polytechnic campus and because of budget reasons our library is no longer allowed to purchase YA or fiction; just academic resources. We get a lot of students that just want something fun to read (and not all the students have cars to go to the public library). The staff has donated many of our own books to add to the catalog for students to checkout and read for fun. If you are willing, any of the Gollancz paperbacks (Magic Bites) would be wonderful. I know they are UK copies, but they are marketed toward a younger crowd and the larger size would allow us to send them to the bindery.

I am a library assistant at a library that has a bit of a unique problem. We are one of seven village libraries in a fairly affluent town. However, our particular village has a large population of homeless and underprivaleged people in it who we try to serve to the best of our ability. We constantly face cuts that the other libraries in our town do not b/c we cannot raise the same funds due to our particular population. Anyways, I would love to have any of the Kate Daniels books you have availbe or any of the audios. Paranormal fiction is hugely popular with our patrons as are audios but our budget does not allow for as much purchasing in these areas as we might wish. Thank you so much for this wonderful offer.

What a generous offer! I am the manager of a small library outside of Savannah – Richmond Hill. Oregon’s gain was our loss when you moved! As you know, we have a large military population and many of our patrons commute to Hunter AAF and Ft. Stewart. They are heavy users of our audio collection and it is a struggle to keep enough new titles in the collection. We would be grateful for any audios (and books, of course). You can find us under Locations on our regional library’s website (Statesboro Regional Public Libraries) and I would be happy to send you any information needed to verify our library address. You are an inspiration to more people than you can imagine! Thank you!

This is wonderful of you! You guys are incredibly generous. I’ve been the cataloger at the Franklin Township Public Library in Somerset County, NJ for over 12 years now. (www.franklintwp.org) Actually, I first found your works because the person who buys our fantasy decided to try you out in the collection. I’ve been “pushing” your work on colleagues and interested patrons ever since! One of the collections I do development for is our International Collection (ie. foreign languages); we could use Chinese, Spanish, and Russian copies of your works. Though I hesitate to sound too greedy, I have to admit that the audiobooks are extremely tempting as well. :)

My library system is one of those that has the policy all donations go straight to the book sale pile. Our RWA chapter used to donate a copy of our speaker’s book to the library because we held meetings there.

Then they told us the policy change and we quit giving them books. It is sad because some of our smaller press published authors can’t get their books into the libraries and it would give them greater exposure.

You are so cool to do this. I checked my library’s online catalog and found that they have all of your books except Magic Bites (multiple copies in most cases) but only 3 audio books. I’ll be passing this along to them.

As an interesting note, the catalog shows that there are 2 copies of Hexed and 4 copies each of Magic Slays and Fate’s Edge on order. Yay! I’m still going to buy my own copies, but I love to see you get the exposure. :)

I’m an assistant for a city library in Peoria, AZ. Our budget was dismal this past year and looks to be the same for this year. All paperback purchases were suspended. We would love to have some of your donations.

Audios: M.Bites, M.Burns, M.Strikes, On the Edge, and Bayou Moon (we don’t currently have any of yours in audio)
Spanish Books: I couldn’t make out all the titles, but one of each please. We deal with a lot of Spanish speakers (and if after all this, there are Spanish copies available, I can spread to word to other libraries here in the Valley. if that’s okay. Good Spanish fiction books are rare)
English copies: Must Love Hellhounds, On the Edge, Bayou Moon, M.Bites, M.Burns, M.Strikes and M.Bleeds

Thank you so much for doing this.

    1. Mashiara
      Mashiara May 14, 2011 at 3:22 pm .

just double checked the pictures and looks like the copies of M. Bleeds are already spoken for. I checked our catalog and we have a circulating copy here and at the branch, so looks like I just jumped the gun when asking for it. sorry. would an extra copy of Magic Bites and Bayou Moon be feasable? We’re down to one copy of M. Bites here and it’s been sent through mending already and there aren’t any copies of Bayou Moon here or at the branch.

Just let me know if I’m being greedy. I’ve been trying to get the UF collection up to snuff for years and it’s hard to resist free book for patrons.

I grew up in NYC, and have lived in other large cities for my whole life. Until I moved to the village of Sugarcreek, where I now live. Moving here was difficult, and I’d say the tiny local library saved my life. I love the ladies that work(ed) there. Due to budget constraints they can rarely buy new books, no longer have more than one full-time librarian, and have shorted hours.

I don’t work there, but I would love to be able to gift them with new books, even one would be great. I promise you that I would give any book(s) you donated directly to them. It would be a way to thank them for being there for me. Thank you for doing this, for whomever wins!
