It’s a lovely morning in Texas, sunny and golden, and the day will probably end up being scorching hot. I am looking forward to some writing. We are very much behind one our deadline. First, prerelease stress got me, then the release week tour ate up time, and then dealing with hitting #1 ate up a little more. I knew it was a big deal, but I didn’t realize how big. The publisher called us. Not our editor, but the president of mass market paperbacks for Berkley. I about fell over.
It took Gordon a couple of days to deal with it. I asked him what was up, and he said, “Now we’ll have to hit #1 again somehow, or everyone will be disappointed.” And I said, “No, we don’t! We’re going to hard cover.” Yay, consequence free success.
But now it’s all done. Mundane things have taken over. Kid 2 broke her glasses. Again. I’ve never met a kid who was that hard on glasses. She steps on them. She drops them while exiting the car. One time she superglued them to her desk. The fact that she has contacts doesn’t seem to help any. Usually I take it all in stride, because in a grand scheme of things glasses are a small thing and easy to replace. We get to hear all about other kids’ problems and if broken glasses is the worst of her issues, I will be so happy, you have no idea. So the first time we had to fix them, I wasn’t that upset. The second time I wasn’t either. The third time she got a lecture from Gordon. This time, I just kind of sighed.
We had wisely gotten a warranty on the glasses and after the third time of fixing them within 12 months, the poor Eye Center employees shook their heads and said that this time it’s permanent. It’s been a year so she needed an eye exam anyway. We got her a new back-up pair on her old prescription and set the appointment for the new eye exam. Yesterday was the day of that appointment.
Gordon: Where are your back-up glasses? (Which are at this point less than a week old.)
Kid 2, panic: I don’t know.
This was the last straw.
Gordon and me:
Luckily glasses have been found at a friend’s house. While all this was going on, Gordon made an appointment for me and him, so looks like we’ll be sporting new glasses as well. It’s about time. Mine are over 2 years old and obsessively cleaning them doesn’t seem to help with scratches.
Hoping to work a little bit today. I got stuck on a vampire fighting scene, but we worked through it so I’ll need to write it out. If I am good and make some words happen, I can work a little bit on the Innkeeper website and Kate wiki, which really needs to be updated.
