Kristi: Wow, hard choices here! There were so many excellent observations, things that Ilona and I missed completely in our critique of the lab. Two of my favorites were the makeshift pipettor holders (serological pipettes taped to the top bench) and the numerous unlabeled reagent bottles. (BTW, the “straws” are disposable spatulas for weighing dry materials, and the “hood” is a biosafety cabinet that does not require venting.) FWIW, at my university this lab would likely be shut down the first time Health and Safety walked in, for any number of the reasons that people pointed out.
Colleen, for noticing the wire biohazard bag holder on the first bench
Carradee, for the succinct comment that there is no space to work at all
Teresa, for pointing out that these are not lab benches at all!
Amy J, for a lovely science-filled answer
Baby Curran prize winner: Bat, for the comment that summed it up very nicely: “I can’t get past the jumble of cr*p stacked on the lab benches.”
