I ranted on Kate’s Facebook today on the subject of some failings of math education. Which gave me an awesome idea for a blog post. A lot of people are intimidated by math, specifically because of the calculations involved. But calculations – while vital to achieve the correct result – are only a tool. Behind it is the basic understanding of logic and sometimes thinking outside the box. With that in mind, here are some brain teasers for you this morning. Click **View Questions** at the end of the quiz to see the explanations.

I had to do fasting lab work today. This means no coffee; I saw the word “math” and stopped right there.

Jessica says

Yeah! I can hold my head high today. Although to be fair I’m a biochemist and I had to battle through calculus many moons ago. Nice reminder of basic algebra! Thanks. Is there a trig quiz next? I feel like SOHCAHTOA doesn’t get out enough.

Katharine Young says

WOO HOO, I GOT 100. It makes me feel better, I am currently battling through calculus.

Lisa Howard says

Wait. Kate has a facebook page? I can’t find her; what’s the link?

Rhyn says

Same here! And by the way – I adore Math and was thrilled by this post. If only we encouraged kids to play with Math the way they play with balls and musical instruments – both of which activities need a lot of math BTW, if you think about it. It’s no one talks about or values that aspect of those activities.

Aydee says

I do math ALL day long at work. So, why must you torture me like this?

I still got 3 out of 3 correct.

DeeAnn Fuchs says

I’m glad to say that I passed a 5th grade math test. It’s not my best subject but I can usually hold my own with a little thinking! I agree that playing with math would make it easier for kids to learn it. Story problems used to make me quake in fear! Wait, they still do!!

Smeech says

What is Kate’s Facebook? “I ranted on Kate’s Facebook today…” Where can I find Kate’s Facebook?

ms duck says

3 points 100% in 03.15 seconds.

so i’m an accountant, sue me 🙂

Michelle says

Well, I got them all right. I am sure it would have been faster if I remembered my basic algebra, but my math education ended with high school geometry over 50 years ago. So, I figured it out the hard way!

Fan in California says

Thanks!! I got two of three (number 1 stumped me) by my husband got them all — and the thought process behind number 1 right away. I’m not a math person but I did enjoy this!! Thanks again!!

Theodore D. says

I keep forgetting to unclick my first choice!

I got 3 of 3 except I clicked two on the last question… *chuckles*

I’ve been doing Boolean Algebra and my head hurts from all the truth tables!

😀

Thank you for the fun!

cool_gal95 says

Truth Tables in your head? You have my respect

Claire says

3 out of 3 in 1:01 🙂

Sarah says

NO! NO MATH! ONLY WORDS!

Seriously, I hate math. I know it makes the universe go ’round but I’ll be damned if I’m doing it when I don’t have too.

Alison says

Three out of three in 1 minute 51 seconds. It probably would have been quicker but on the third one I just reverse engineered the answers to see if they worked rather than actually do it from scratch.

Oh, and I’m an accountant.

Again, Kate has a FB page?

Misti says

I never get to do quizzes without writing them since, I’m a math teacher. 100% for me!!! 🙂

Katie S. says

I hate math and I’m a financial adminstrator. (I know, strange, but I do love my job). However, I came into work to do payroll today (Sunday)..that is enough math for me!

Kate’s FB page? Ilona, please give us more details!

Karen says

That was so much fun!!!! Now I have to get my sister to take the test, see who is faster.

travin says

Okay thank you for this, I finally used the math a learned over 20 years ago. They did tell me that I would need it some day,,,ha for once they were right 3 out 3. Customer Service (i.e, cashier at a gas station)

rene says

I only got one right lol! I guess im not smarter than a 5th grader. Heheheh oh well I’m better with reading.

UlrikeDG says

If I’d realized I was being timed, I would have done #3 on paper, instead of working it in my head.

Ericka says

I missed the last one, which is weird because I got the 2 equations (30=x+y and 2x+4y=84). But then I solved the second equation for x (x=42-2y), and that led to 8 pigs and 22 geese. What happened?

Mariana Chaffee says

My granddaughter loved these. Where can I find more?

Ryan says

I just tried to logic at 5:30 AM with no coffee. Took ponger than it should have but no wrong answers I’m going to call it a win.

Ryan says

Longer* lol… still a win

I am a math teacher and laughed when I saw the comparison to Russian math. Its probably true that math is taught at a higher level earlier on in Russia. However, students in Russia have to test well to stay in school and have to test into most of the middle-school and above level programs. Over there education is a privileged not a right, and until the country thinks differently we are stuck with what we have. Here is a solution that a Russian math teacher and Russian parent who both emigrated to America came up with: http://www.russianschool.com/
