Snipet, Edge 4: My Lord, you are a dufus.

There may be other cool stuff later, but for now you get an Edge Snippet.  I finally figured out this book.  It’s Regency in jeans.

“While I have your attention,” she said, “I’d appreciate it if in the future, when you come up with a plan that makes a hardened criminal blink, you could at least give me the gist of it ahead of time.  In broad strokes.  While I don’t have your expertise in dealing with criminal underground, I’m a woman of reasonable intelligence and I react badly when surprised.  I understand that you’re used to being the lone swordsman, but I promise you that I can be an asset at the planning stage and can assist you better if I know where you’re going.  Use me as your, what’s the Broken expression?  Sounding door?”

“Sounding board,” he said, his voice dry.

“Exactly.

Richard’s face had a most curious expression.  Two parts outrage, one part shock, and three parts politeness, so ingrained in him, that it was keeping the rest of his emotions in check. “Will there be anything else, my lady?”

“Yes.  It would bring me great pleasure if, when both of us are present during a conversation, you could occasionally acknowledge my presence and allow me to speak for myself, instead of referring to me in the third person and speaking for me.”

Richard locked his jaw.  She waited patiently to see if he would explode.

“The next time we have to talk to an unstable violent psychopath, I’ll strive to keep that in mind,” he said.

Please do, because the next time I won’t stand there quietly.  “Thank you for indulging me.”

“My pleasure.”

  1. You are awesome snippet beneficence lately! Are you trying to make up to us after the horrible Twitter tease of your editor’s final comment on GMM?

(If you are, it’s working. I might forgive it before August.)

  2. Heh heh! Fierce! Regency in jeans. I think that’s a great description. :-)

  3. This book is sounding awesome! Thanks for the snippet.

  4. Jenette says:

“Regency in jeans” totally sounds like Richard in my mind. Can’t wait to hear more from these two. Thanks for the snippet.

    thank you!

  12. I am so looking forward to this one!

  13. This snippet sounds awesome. I love how realistic your characters are. If Kaldar and Audrey were having this conversation, I can imagine a completely different facial expressions and a lot of flirting!

  14. Since it’s Regency in jeans, will we see:
    1) camo lace?
    2) footmen on the rusting Chevy P/U?
    3) visitors providing email notices instead of having the aforementioned footman dropping off a card?
    4) morning refreshments will be cola and cheesypuffs instead of tea and watercress sandwiches?
    5) John Deere canvas jackets instead of a fine wool waistcoat?

Ah, I could go on with this all day. Damn you, employment!

  15. Snippety goodness – yay! Thanks! :)

  20. I think probably the ultimate compliment a fan might pay an author, would be to refer to the characters in their books as people. Your books are wonderful, the plots are great, there’s romance without sex (at least not too much sex) lots of adventures,,,, and best of all I want the people in your books to move in next door to me, so that I can invite them over for a cup of tea.

  24. Regency in Jeans. Yes! The snippet is great – lots of fun now, and in increased anticipation of the finished story. By the time of publication, you will have a slathering mob of fans about to explode with excitement and anticipation, said excitement and anticipation built over time naturally, but spurred by snippets. That is assuming we all haven’t exploded or imploded as a result of the release of Gunmetal Magic.

    Thank you.

Please don’t forget, some of us don’t Twitter (at least not Internet Twitter). Here and there we get tantalizing hints of things we are missing. It is almost, but not quite, enough to pull us in. Whoa, am I actually saying “Don’t have fun on Twitter?” I hope I’m not…. LOL

  25. Yeah! Thank you for the snippet – I love the sparks between Richard & Charlotte.

Thanks for the interesting snippet. Am so looking forward to this book.

  32. Ilona, the mighty Snippet Goddess! Regency in jeans- LOL. And you don’t even have a duke or scoundrel or rogue or rake in book title!

  33. Thanks, that was great.

  34. Love this! I love all romance and urban fantasy, but I started with reading Regencies. Richard is so controlled, or at least what we’ve seen of him so far, that he would fit right into that world. I think that “Regency in jeans” is PERFECT! I’m already in love with Charlotte, and I can’t wait to see the two of them together. Thank you, again, for the great snippet!

  35. smileygirl3090 says:

Sadly the Regency reference is lost on me, I don’t know if this is because I am English or I’m just being silly but I still really enjoyed the snippet. I’m glad no one was watching me though because I pulled some pretty weird faces trying to picture two parts outrage, one part shock, three parts politeness…

    • But the Regency period is English! I guess you don’t read Georgette Heyer?
      LOL about the faces!

  36. michael says:

Oh, there is a fight just waiting to break out. Thank you for the snipet.

  37. What did we do to get TWO snippets/excerpts in so many days? Did Christmas come early? Lovely, thank you!

  38. I love how understatedly sassy she is! (I know that’s not really a word, but I felt like it fit.)

Thanks so so so much for all the snippets. I’m getting more and more excited for this book. Like to the point that I have to quit thinking about how much I’m anticipating its release so I don’t go completely nuts!

  39. I can’t wait to get to know these characters. Thank you for all the sharing today!

  40. You know, I confess that I originally read The Edge because I love you and Kate so damn much I would likely buy you reciting the newspaper on a daily basis. However! This series is just so darn cool that it has in fact sucked me in all on its own – the overlapping layers of Weird, Edge, and Broken – the unusual combinations of magical abilities and strengths, influenced by which “land” you live in – and the breakaways who manage to crossover and create their own experience across these lands. So cool – can’t wait for the full story!

  41. Great!!! Very excited about the next Edge book.

  46. wooooohoooo, fantastic snippet, thank you! Can’t wait to read more about Richard- he’s a deep one :-)

  47. I so wish i had something original to say but suffice it to say I CANT WAIT FOR ANYTHING YOU WRITE!!
