So by now some of you might have read this at RT Book Reviews:
Ready for Alternate-Reality Atlanta? You guys. Ilona Andrews’sNew York Times bestselling Urban Fantasy series featuring P.I. Kate Daniels has been optioned to Voodoo Television by producer Jerry Daigle (Odd Thomas)! We can’t wait to see Kate’s magic-filled Atlanta — we’re certain it will make for some awesome onscreen entertainment. We can’t wait!
What does this mean?
It means we sold the film and TV rights to Kate Daniels series. The rights are sold to a producer, which will put together a proposal and then shop it with the larger studios.
Does this mean there will be a TV or a movie?
We hope so. It is a very long shot, simply because film rights are a whole different ballgame. It’s very difficult to get a project to production stage. You have to get one of the bigger studios interested, you have to wrangle up the money, etc etc etc. Even if you clear all of the hurdles, a series with successful track record like Dresden Files can fail to find an audience.
Will they screw up Kate’s world?
We were very selective in our sale. The person who was involved with purchasing the rights is a fan of the series. She has repeatedly beta-read the last few books, because she has an amazing eyes for continuity and clarity of the narrative. So the characters are in good hands. However, the nature of the TV and film is such that plot lines will likely get altered and some characters may not be as true to cannon. This is simply the nature of the adaptation. Even in GRR Martin’s case, where the adaptation is faithful to the books, plot lines diverge and characters who are alive in the books have bneen killed by the TV series.
I am excited!
We are cautiously optimistic. Something may come of it, if we are very, very lucky, or nothing might. But we’ve done our best to ensure that if it is made, it will be really cool. 🙂
