Admin Stuff, Magic Rises Beta, and So On

Magic-Rises_smSo the deadline for Magic Rises was yesterday and we pulled several 14 hour days to get it, only to find out that our editor is on a vacation.  Heh.  This happens quite often because editors have odd schedules.  We’re looking for 5 3 beta readers.  Preference will be given to existing betas, but at least one spot will be given to a new person.  The manuscript right now has gone through a round of changes requested by the editor.  The next step is the copy edit, where minor snags get ironed out.  If you are the type of person who notices every grammatical mistake, you may want to wait until after the copyedit at the galley stage.

The book contains big spoilers.  Every beta copy sent will be unique so if you leak it, we will know it’s you and then we will be mad and sad.  :(

If you would prefer to just read the book for the pure fun of it, wait.  Because this is the last chance for us to make large structural changes, the content may change.  Although not likely.  If you read the book at this stage and then read it again when it’s done, your experience may not be the “Ooh, shiny!”  But “Hmm, I wonder what they changed.”  You will be reading for things like, “Confused in this scene!”  Or “This is so sad!” or “He’s a jerk, I hate him forever!”

If you are still superbrave and want to enter, comment on this post or email to us with BETA in the subject line.  Some people want to tell us a little bit more about themselves and not everyone is comfortable sharing in the comments.  We will pick someone by tonight.

The Innkeeper is slightly delayed.  Sorry, I am so boiled.

Audiobooks: for some reason we received four different emails about audiobooks overnight, specifically release dates for Steel’s Edge.  I don’t know if it’s the same person being a little obsessive or different people, but the answer: I have no clue. I know Renee recorded it, because she’d asked me to call with pronunciation.  I  can ask Recorded Books on Monday or you can ask Recorded Books – the answer will likely be the same.

Comments

  1. I have been reading for years and years lol. And have won and been given arcs to beta and pre read and I don’t sell nor do I give out spoilers. I hate to have things spoiled for me and wouldn’t do it to anyone else.

  2. Beta,

I probably missed it! Darn it that’s what happens when I decide to go out lol. I have an author friend that I read for and I have never shared or given any of her stuff to any one. That is just wrong! I even buy her books once she releases them to the public. People that really appreciate the authors talent and respect them and the books they read should never do that! Writing takes time, effort and heart.

  3. I’d love the chance to be a beta reader if thou haven’t chosen anyone yet. I’m an avid reader who is also detail oriented and will flip back to make sure the movie going on in my head when I read makes sense.

  4. Why am I always late when you ask for betas? If you’re still looking, I would LOVE to be one! I won the Gunmetal Magic naming contest and beta’d it as well as Magic Gifts. Please pick me! I would beta your grocery lists if you wanted. :D DD

  5. Put me down as another “too late” for the beta reading. Ah, my, that’s the pitfall of not spending much time on the net after the early A.M.
I’m not supergrammarian, though I’m not totally lacking in knowledge. I can be a nitpicker and have proofread technical procedures. To the point you seemed to be looking at, I often set down a book to think about the scene or scenario I’ve just read and like to go back to check out how it goes with what was previously written.
I know this is moot, but thought I’d toss it in as “sharing”.
Congratulations to those who were chosen, you lucky dogs!

  6. Megan Richardson says:

Would love the opportunity to beta if a spot is still available

  7. WoW!
    Actually a personalized book!!
I know it’s for safetly purpose, but WOW! It’s a win win situation!!!

I love your wit and works and somethimes in the final job there are cuts of shenes that are neverless fond of joy for us, I would be honored.

  8. It would be awesome to be Beta!

  9. May I say how impressed I am that Renee calls to check on how to say things? I’ve seen/heard the results of those who don’t bother and it’s supremely annoying.

I’m so pinkly-happy that Renee is doing the audio.

I still hate her for being so pretty, though.

  10. Rebecca Deckebach says:

Would love to be “Beta reader”, Always liked reading anything you write; have read Kate series & other stories too many times to count (and I’m an accountant! LOL)

  11. I have probably missed it already! Damn you sickness!
I have no qualms telling you that i have never done beta work before. Im not a book blogger or any such thing. And i don’t generally write reviews even when i like a book. And i have no idea what kind of feedback you look for from a beta. I am one of those ubiquitous readers who buy a book and enjoy it in peace alone preferring to make the journey with the protagonists with the story proceeding in our minds like a movie reel. I love your books . Mostly because Kate is the kind of person i almost never get to read about.
I just had to give it a shot (minuscule as they may be)

  12. I would love to be a beta!

  13. Andrew Lawler says:

Beta. I love to read UF and have for many years.

  14. Northwoman says:

UGH! I wish I would have seen this yesterday! I was lucky enough to get to preread and comment on something previously for you. I have done lots of beta work for fanfiction authors. I am always willing to beta for you.
