There are a lot of those floating on the net, heh. Enjoy!
10,000 – New idea! Shiny, shiny, shiny!
15,000 – So what exactly happens next?
20,000 – Maybe this idea isn’t as good as I thought.
25,000 – This idea sucks.
30,000 – Oh God. I hate it, I’m stuck, I shouldn’t have written this in the first place. Stuck, stuck, stuck.
35,000 – Maybe this wasn’t so bad.
40,000 – I could work with that.
45,000 – It’s lagging. I know it’s lagging. I need to definitely fix the first chapter.
50,000 – Ugh
55,000 – Can I just quit now?
60,000 – God, I hate this stupid story. It’s pure crap. It’s the worst thing that I’ve ever written. Why won’t it just die and rot in the gutter in hell?
65,000 – Have to finish, just write and don’t think about how much it sucks…
70,000 – Just get it to finale, just get it to finale, I can do this.
75,000 – Actually, you know it’s not too awful bad…
80,000 – It won’t fit. There is no way I can pack this conclusion into 15 K.
85,000 – So help me God.
90,000 – Die, book, die!
95,000 – I am done, I’m done, oh saints, I am done.
2 weeks later:
10,000 K – New idea! Shiny, shiny, shiny….

You hit it dead on. I’m printing this out so I can refer to it as needed. Right now I’m in the “this idea sucks” stage on the second book in the series. I think a vacation is in order
haha, love the ‘slight’ change of mood between:
90,000 – Die, book, die!
and
95,000 – I am done, I’m done, oh saints, I am done.
This is reassuring. I’m in the 25k-word stage with my NaNo, right now. I’ve taken the past two days off to recharge, making me 4k words behind. (I’m not writing on Sundays, so I need to write 2k words/non-Sunday.)
I’m getting epiphanies for other projects—including one that’s been stuck for a few years—but the main one I’m having for my NaNo project is: Still not ready to write this. Need more research.
*rereads list*
I usually hit this stage at about 17-22k words, but then, I write shorter novels than you do. Maybe I should start keeping data points on this kind of thing…
LOL Very funny stuff.
That explains it!
Spot on lol I might print this list out too and stick it by my computer so i can laugh and cry at the same time lol
Yes, everything you just said – so true!
and the cycle repeats itself. lol XD
kinda sounds like every pregnancy/delivery experience too.
You know…I kinda go through the same thing when I start a new drawing. I even tell people when it’s to the half point “Don’t look at it, it’s in it’s ugly stage”. I always have to remind myself when it’s close to being done, not to half ass it and rush just so it can be done too, lol!
Shiny shiny shiny! I love it!
Ha! I’m at that stage with my current WIP. I’m about 90% done and all I can think is how awful it is. I know in my head it’s good, but right now that tiny part of my brain’s not having it. Right now it’s thinking I suck. *sigh*
Doing NaNo too and the idea is always so shiny at the start but then lags a bit. Except since it’s shorter, your 80k goes to my 20k. =(
I have yet to reach halfway.
Yah! 62% done. What does yellow bar mean?
Yx
I got tired of the green.
lol. Not m-scan malfunction then.
Hi,
I remember you mentioned, in one of your previous blogs, a really good writing software that told you how many words you’d written etc etc.
Just wondering if you could tell me the name? I scanned your blogs again but couldn’t find it.
Thanks

thank u thank u thank u
Thank you Ilona!!!! That rocks
I read it out to Mom to explain to her why my two sisters and I keep writing even though it drives us crazy… She still thinks we are crazy but at least she now realises that this is a normal affliction for anyone who writes anything
BTW- at least once a week now I read out one of you blog posts to my family. They enjoy them greatly (a few have now bought some of your books
, Muahahhahaha!) and the younger kids ask me regularly what the newest post is about.
[...] New book, same story. [...]
I hear ya, sista! I’m at the 45K mark. The book is lagging. Oh, heck, it’s crawling. I’m so stuck I’m writing the last few scenes as those are vivid as anything. The middle? Who knows? Who cares? Oh, yeah, my editor. And my bank account. Maybe a couple of readers.
Argh!!!!
